Hour a Week Christian
By Dennis Huebshman
There are many churches today that have stopped having Sunday evening and Wednesday evening services; but for those who haven’t this could also be called “Two or Three Hour a Week Christians”. With 168 hours in a week, that leaves anywhere from 165 – 167 hours we have to ourselves. After all, that’s enough time for God anyway. Right?
With some of the “production services” that have come into being – light shows, fog machines, heart-thumping music and ear tickling messages – it’s all some people can take in without being totally and emotionally drained. The rest of the week is spent doing “normal” things to get ready for the next performance. No need for any additional study or time spent on our “religion” as we’ve “given” the Lord enough time for this week. We’ve been so inspired and fulfilled compared to the “stale” Sundays and Wednesday’ of the past. Right?
Besides, by attending these presentations, we’ve fulfilled our obligation to the Father and are therefore guaranteed a spot in Heaven just for being so good. Right?
Everyone knows there’s no Hell, so God owes us just for showing up at the “worship services”. We sing along with the music, repeat the sayings the “messenger or pastor” leads us in, so we can claim our “own” holiness. He’s surely read all the word, so we can take at face value all he is giving us. Right?
If at this point you agree with what I’ve just presented, therein lies a real problem. Please keep in mind, it was “organized” religious leaders that crucified our Savior. These are the ones who should’ve known better because they had access to all the scrolls and other materials of the past. They were supposed to have studied them and should’ve been aware that theirs was the perfect time for the Messiah to appear. Instead, they had been more concerned with enforcing all the laws that God supposedly gave (including the numerous “updates” they made to them), than actually seeking the truth for themselves. This is where Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea were the exceptions to the norm of that day. They actually believed Jesus was their much waited for Messiah
Today’s “organized” religions are no better off. In fact, some of the mainline churches are going to the far left, away from the Savior. There are new proclamations from some about alternate lifestyles that leads people to believe God doesn’t really consider them an abomination. Also, some are saying “All Religions” worship the same god, and therefore there are many ways to heaven. Some deny Jesus is the Savior and some even deny He exists; so, He isn’t necessary for us to believe in.
Now for a statement that will undoubtedly not set well with some. If you aren’t being fed the true word with EVERY service, you might as well skip the 1 to 3 hours that you think you are “giving” to the Lord. Also, if Jesus is only on your mind from 1 to 3 hours a week, expect a place in the line at the Great White Throne of Revelation 20:11-15. There are some people (very few according to Matthew 7:13-14) that don’t even go to any church service that really are saved, and will be going up to meet Jesus in the air at the Rapture. No, they don’t “give” 1 to 3 hours per week, but actually they “live” for the savior 24/7. They study for themselves, talk to him regularly (prayer), and accept that He came to this earth and took our sins to the cross with Him; and through His sacrifice, provided a means to be with Him forever! They also know the time is right for Him to call His Church home just any day now.
Before a wrong impression is given, these people don’t walk around with a bible under their arm saying, “Praise The Lord” every few minutes and don’t have halo’s over their heads. They don’t stop on sidewalks and look up shouting out a prayer for all to see. These are people that get up every day and thank the Father for the blessings they have. As they go through a day, if something good happens they say (even if only in their minds) Thank You. If something bad, they ask Him for help. They understand there is nothing physically they can do to be worthy of His precious gift, and there is no way they can ever earn it (Ephesians 2:8-10). However, they have confessed with their mouths that Jesus is Lord, and that God raised Him from the dead to conquer sin and death for all who accept Him. (Romans 10:9) They have formed a true relationship that has caused their eternity to already have begun.
They also believe, without a doubt, that Jesus is the ONLY Way, Truth and Life, and they can’t get to the Father except though Him. (John 14:6
They don’t sit down and “count” the hours they “give” to the Lord to measure their piety, but look forward to an eternal life with the Savior because they have a real relationship with Him right now. No song or performance is necessary. To “worship” the Savior is to believe He is who He says He is (John 10:30), and all the words the Father gave us are the true – NOT ALTERED – scriptures, and are to be trusted. (2 Timothy 3:16)
No, my wife and I do not attend a “religious” service for 1 to 3 hours per week; however, we have Jesus in our hearts and know the Holy Spirit is within us. We don’t count the hours we spend worshiping Him, but are looking forward to His “soon return” so we can leave this sin-filled world for good. There will be few that accept Jesus and His free offer of eternal life by having a secure relationship with Him.
Call out to Him today, if you haven’t already, and He will accept you. (Acts 2:21 and Romans 10:13). “Spend” a couple of minutes inviting Him to be your Savior, and your investment will return to you in unmeasurable accounts. You will guarantee a Forever of happiness, peace and Love.
Shalom Aleclem – Peace be with You!
