Elon Musk Won’t Be Allowed to Buy Twitter

I’ve never been a fan of Elon Musk or the reality distortion field surrounding him. If you need a reason, let’s start with who really financed Tesla. Ordinary car owners in California who didn’t get a choice about funding the EV purchases of the upper class. And I’m skeptical that Musk is doing more than playing another complicated game by proposing to take over Twitter. He’s very effective as a billionaire influencer on Twitter, but the social media platform isn’t exactly the gold at the end of the rainbow when it comes to profits. Musk probably made a lot more money through it than he would from trying to dominate it.
Not that it really matters.
Musk is good at pushing buttons and he pushed a big one. Twitter is much smaller than Facebook, but it’s where the “people who matter” hang out and set the narratives.
The threat of free speech, which is to say no more censorship of the people they dislike for political reasons, has led to unadulterated hysteria from them along with essays explaining why censorship is free speech and free speech is censorship because that’s how equity works.
The formerly open internet has long since become closed down and nowhere is that as true as it is at the top. The tight integration and interrelationship of Big Tech means that Musk won’t be allowed to take over Twitter. And he knows it too. I suspect this is a game whose upshot will be demonstrating the narrow limits of competition and mobility in a landscape dominated by a handful of huge companies and funds.
Twitter is really a social club for elites and they’re not going to let their cozy club get broken up.
