Bragg’s War on the NYPD
The extra burden of an unconstitutional indictment.
By Michael Letts
So, there are people out there that think our police officers are a scourge with no right to exist or exhibit their authority and that they don’t care about people. Nonproductive drivel like this litters the Internet highway and social media. Oh, but they couldn’t be more wrong.
I’ve been on the front lines alongside my brothers and sisters in blue for over 30 years. Believe me when I say that these police officers put their lives on the line on a daily basis to keep innocent people protected. Even when there are circumstances outside of their control. And even if bad things happen (like, for instance, Uvalde), our officers as a whole continue to hold their head up high.
We currently are in an unprecedented uncivil war between forces who uphold the Constitution and rule of law, vs. Leftists who are breaking every legal rule in the book to get rid of Donald Trump at all costs. But in this war, 90% of the police officers are on the other side, the side of Trump and the U.S. Constitution.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg convinced a grand jury to put out an indictment on former President Donald Trump over purported payouts to former porn star Stormy Daniels. I’ve already explained countless times how payouts aren’t illegal, and that the whole thing is already unnecessary.
But the real damage being done here by Bragg is to his city’s own police department. In the wake of Trump arriving in New York this week to surrender on the indictment charges, NYPD assigned additional officers to protective duty, setting up barricades and closing up roads surrounding the Manhattan courthouse, and even closing several courtrooms in an effort to prepare for what’s to come.
Why is this “damage,” you ask? There are several factors here. The first is that the courthouse is now preparing for a war it didn’t ask for, and, as a result, several cases will likely be delayed. I mean, that’s a small part of it, but still a significant one.
But the big thing here is what’s happening to New York police officers. They are now going to be on the front lines, fighting for an action that they didn’t even ask for. As Bragg happily presses charges against our former President, these officers will unnecessarily put their lives on the line to make sure the American people don’t break out into bedlam. Mind you, hard as liberals tried to get any national law enforcement organization to take the lead on this war, they only were able to get an NYC DA to do their dirty work. Now police are being dragged through the mud on this, being asked to do things clearly against their consciousness and their sworn oaths.
And if you need an idea of what New York police officers have already been through, let me give you a rundown.
First, in the midst of COVID back in 2020, around 5,000 of them were unfairly fired by the city simply because they didn’t want to take a vaccine that they didn’t have information about. Some of them even had medical reasons to do so, but that wasn’t good enough for the city, apparently. So they were given the heave-ho and, despite Mayor Eric Adams saying some wrong was done there, they haven’t been given their jobs back.
Then there’s the whole “defund the police” movement, in which rioters demanded that police lose their funding following the death of George Floyd. This affected people nationwide, but New York got it extra hard, especially with the government effectively taking money away from the police forces in the city.
As a result of this, thousands have fled their jobs. Some simply believed that the burden wasn’t worth it anymore, which isn’t a pretty sight to see in the least. Others simply chose to retire, opting for a more peaceful life instead.
Not to mention what Governor Kathy Hochul has put the city through with her demands and ridiculous gun laws, which the police had to work overtime to enforce. As if they weren’t going through enough already with the lack of proper gear and mental health support.
And now this. An arrogant Manhattan District Attorney slapping an unconstitutional indictment on a former President, not even in legal jurisdiction, and unnecessarily turning his city into a war zone between the police and dedicated Americans. I pray for the NYPD right now, because they’re getting pushed to the limit and, honestly, I’m worried this might cause even more to leave. If they do an exit stage left, then who will be left to defend the city? Bragg? Methinks not.
Stay strong, New York police.
