If America Wants God’s Blessing We Must Also Carry His Burden

Today, as a nation, we should not request God’s blessing if we reject His burden. In other words, if we truly want to be blessed of God, we cannot turn our back on the things that matter to Him.
Last week, millions around the country gathered for the National Day of Prayer. President Trump participated as well, even inviting faith leaders to the White House for a ceremonial signing of a religious liberty executive order. That was refreshing to see, given the last eight years of opposition we’ve experienced.
Yet at the same time, radical abortion measures were being debated in state legislatures across the nation. One, in particular, was the state of Delaware, which was set to vote on Senate Bill 5, which aimed to codify Roe v. Wade into Delaware law. It also included the termination of babies capable of living outside the womb.
So it’s important for us to remember, as we request the blessings of God, we must, at the same time, not reject His burdens. Religious liberty is a blessing from God, yet the murder of the unborn is a burden to Him.
God’s word is pretty clear on this:
“They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent. They have built the high places of Baal to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal – something I did not command or mention, nor did it enter my mind” (Jeremiah 19:4b-5).
So while we have days of prayer and defend for our religious liberty rights, which we fully support, we cannot forget our responsibility to defend the rights of the most vulnerable among us.

“Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Your hands are full of blood! Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless” (Isaiah 14-17a).
So as we continue the fight for religious liberty in this nation, let us continue with renewed vigor to defend the unborn with every ounce of energy we have – because if we want God’s blessing we must also carry His burden.
