Miles To Go Before I Sleep

Miles To Go Before I Sleep
By Jack Kinsella

One of the most chilling movies I have ever seen is now almost forty years old but more relevant than ever. Telefon was a Charles Bronson thriller made all the more chilling by the simplicity of the plotline.

The story centered around Bronson’s character, a KGB agent who was assigned to track down and assassinate Russian ‘sleeper agents’ living inside the United States. A rogue Russian agent was threatening to ‘activate’ the sleeper agents, and the Kremlin didn’t want to accidentally trigger a war.

The activation phrase was a line from a Robert Frost poem,

“These woods are lovely, dark and deep
but I have promises to keep
and miles to go before I sleep.”

(I used to love that poem but now I can’t hear it without feeling a little chill.)

When the call came via telephone (hence the movie’s title) the sleepers would dig out their long-stashed weapons and carry out their assignments. But what made the movie so chilling were the sleepers themselves.

One of them was a suburban housewife. She was a sleeper agent. Her husband and her kids were totally unaware until she was activated. Another agent was a good ol’ boy who owned a fishing camp on a Louisiana bayou — until he was activated.

Once activated, they were transformed from ordinary Americans into emotionless killers bent on successfully completing their missions at any cost, including friends, loved ones and (thanks to Hollywood ‘justice’) ultimately themselves.

But what the movie so chilling was how ordinary they were. They could have been anybody. Secondarily, the movie highlighted how easy it would be to plant them. They sneaked into the country and assumed the identities of actual Americans.

They would find an America who had died at an early age (before becoming part of the system) and request a copy of his/her birth certificate. Using that document, they could build a new and entirely ‘clean’ Amerian identity.

When I was a police officer in Texas, I once worked a case where an escapee from an Illinois state prison had assumed the identity of one ‘Maurice Joseph Hobart’. The real Hobart had died before his third birthday in Ohio some twenty years before.

The scheme was clever, but the fake “Hobart” — not so much. I had arrested him on a marijuana charge but what aroused my suspicions and eventually led to his unmasking was his signature on the booking sheet.

He spelled “Maurice” wrong. When I mentioned it, he swore that ‘Mauirce’ was the correct spelling.

By the time I had arrested him, “Hobart” (his real name was Poole) had a driver’s license, birth certificate several credit cards and a Social Security number, all of which were legitimately issued.

I bring up the Hobart story because it not only validates the premise behind the movie, it is a real-world demonstration of how easy it is to do. His records check came back clean.

This guy was no rocket scientist. Had he but bothered to learn how to correctly spell his first name he probably would have paid a fine as Hobart and walked out a free man.

Assessment

Real spies call them ‘illegals’ — foreign agents living under deep cover rather than operating relatively openly from within their embassies. Last week, the FBI announced it had broken up a ring of at least ten Russian ‘illegals’ inside the United States.

Pictured to the right are “Richard and Cynthia Murphy” — they live in New Jersey and have two daughters, 11 and 9 years old. The Murphys lived in the same neighborhood for ten years.

They couldn’t look more like a typical American family. But they are both Russian spies. Their daughters, (both American-born) were nothing more than cover. They didn’t have a clue about what their parents were really up to.

In Boston, “Donald Heathfield” and his wife have two sons, aged 20 and 16. The name “Heathfield” was taken from a dead Canadian — neither sons even suspected that both their parents were really Russian spies.

“Heathfield” worked for Global Partners Inc. an otherwise-upstanding international business development corporation.

Another New York based sleeper had a 17 year old son, but according to court documents, his first loyalty was to “the Service” — even above that to his son.

According to a report in the Toronto Star there are more Russian sleeper agents now in the United States than there were Soviet agents during the Cold War. And for the most part, the media seems more amused by it all that it seems alarmed.

Possibly because one of the spies (Vicky Pelaez) was herself a journalist for more than thirty years? Or maybe it is the expression of a collective sigh of relief? By all accounts, they weren’t very effective. They aren’t even charged with espionage — they didn’t pass any information they couldn’t have gotten off the internet.

But I think that misses the point. We’ve been playing Spy vs Spy with the Russians since 1948. And even with our spies watching their spies, some of these sleepers have been at it for twenty or thirty years and all of them for at least a decade.

Two decades ago, we weren’t particularly on the lookout for Iranian sleepers or al-Qaeda sleepers. Although Iran was our enemy, our focus was on Iraq.

Two decades ago, Osama bin Laden was the leader of the US-backed mujahadeen that had successfully repelled the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, accelerating the collapse of the Soviet Union a year later.

For most of the past decade, America’s borders have been more-or-less wide-open with at least 12 million and possibly as many as 18 million undocumented aliens illegally residing in the US. By way of illustration, because they are undocumented by US immigration, the estimates are accurate within six million!

The 9/11 attacks were carried out against the United States by al-Qaeda sleeper agents. Although they weren’t as deep-cover as the Russian sleepers, they didn’t need to be. There are no Russian lobby groups similar to CAIR waiting to sue the government for religious discrimination when its agents get arrested.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is on record as having flooded the United States with this kind of deep-cover sleeper agent force that he says have orders to conduct missions inside the United States in the event of a US strike on its nuclear facilities.

One wonders why the Obama administration refuses to go beyond diplomatic nudging when it comes to Iran’s nuclear program and why the Obama administration has all but abandoned its alliance with Israel.

One possible answer is that Obama is himself something of a ‘sleeper’ whose real agenda is the one espoused by his former mentor and pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

That agenda calls for the redistribution of wealth from rich white America to the oppressed races of the world and the collapse of the United States as just retribution for her past sins.

Another possible answer is that there are so many sleepers already here that the administration believes the country can’t afford to take the risk.

In either case, the Bible divides the world into four spheres of global power during the last days. Every major power center now in existence is represented — the European Union, the Russian federation, Iran, Israel, China, Islamic North Africa…but no fifth superpower resembling the United States.

There are a number of possible explanations for why America is not mentioned during the Tribulation. One possible explanation is the Rapture — but that doesn’t account for America’s absence. The Rapture only accounts for the absence of the Church.

The alternative explanations are a lot more chilling.

Canadian pundit Jeffrey Simpson wrote an op-ed published Sunday in the Toronto Globe and Mail summing up the state of affairs in America with a Fouth of July-themed piece subtitled; “The Great Republic is in a Parlous (perilous) State Politically and Economically“

The Apostle Paul opened his commentary on the condition of the last days Church saying,

“This know also that in the last days, perilous times shall come.” (2nd Timothy 3:1)

“These woods are lovely, dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep.”

Perilous times.
