Will Heaven Be Boring?
By Grant Phillips

Just to ask the question, “Will Heaven be boring?” almost seems like an affront to God, but surprisingly, there are those who think Heaven will be boring. There are those who think we will be floating on a cloud, playing a harp for eternity. Then there are those who think all we will be doing for eternity is having endless worship services.

First of all, we will not be lying on a cloud playing a harp, period. That erroneous concept has come from movies, television shows, commercials, and even comedic jokes. Secondly, we will be worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ, but we will be doing so because we will be so grateful and in awe of Him as God. We will want to worship Him, but that is not all we will do.

When thinking of God, we need to look around us at His creation and consider how diverse it is. Most of us don’t appreciate what is around us, maybe because we see it every day and don’t really give it much thought. Allow me to offer just a few points to consider.

How many different types of grass are there? The botanists tell us there are about 12,000 different types of grass. How many different species of trees are there? As of 2013 the Amazon rain forest alone is thought to have nearly 16,000 different species of trees.

It is estimated that our earth has 3-30 million (why such a wide range, I don’t know) different species of animals. Even with the lowly rock there are three different types: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. There are over 400,000 different types of flowering plants, and over 100 different types of bushes and shrubs. If there are so many different species and types of everything on earth, why would it be any different in Heaven?

Have you ever noticed that we all don’t like the same foods, and we don’t necessarily like the same food prepared the same way? Consider the omelet. There are many different ways to prepare an omelet for breakfast.

Not everyone likes their steak rare, or well-done. Not everyone likes steak for that matter. Even a salad can be prepared many different ways. I personally believe that many of our likes and dislikes will change, but should there not remain some diversity? Most certainly.

What about people? There may be similarities in looks but none are exactly the same. As human beings, we also do not have the same likes and dislikes. Some folks love music while some do not. Some enjoy sports but others do not. Some like to climb mountains while others prefer swimming. Some prefer to swim in the ocean, while others prefer to just sit on the beach and watch the waves while enjoying the warm sun.

Not everyone worships the same way. Some are quiet and laid back while others are more boisterous. Will the Lord change our personalities so that we are as mere zombies? Of course not.

Have you ever looked at pictures of outer space and seen how beautiful it is? Did you notice how God made the planets, stars, galaxies, etc. all “different” from each other?

My point in all this is that God’s creation, including people, is so varied, nothing could ever be boring, because nothing is exactly the same.

The apostle Paul said of Heaven, “I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago — whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows — such a one was caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man — whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows — how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.” (2 Corinthians 12:2-4)

Paul went on to say in Philippians 1:19ff that his desire was to be in Heaven with the Lord. Would he have felt that way if Heaven is a “black and white” world compared to our world of color? Speaking of color, I believe colors will be more vivid and varied than we can presently imagine.

God has given us all special gifts and talents. Why would He change that? Don’t you think we would actually be involved in what He has gifted us with to serve Him?

Lest we forget, there will be no aches and pains, no need for doctors and hospitals. There will be no hatred, jealousy, greed or selfishness. In other words, there will be no sin and none of anything that comes from sin. We will all truly love each other with a love we cannot currently fathom.

The glory of Heaven is so beyond our puny minds, but the greatest of all is that we will be with Jesus, face to face. The very One who has created all we know and much more we do not know, has provided an eternity for us who know Him, that will not be boring. To the contrary, we will busy in many different ways, joyfully serving Him.

I believe we will see Jesus as the Son of man when He came in His first advent and also as the Son of God as He will show the world in His second coming. In other words, we will see Him as He is…God. Can any of us imagine seeing our holy God face to face?

Anyone who will be honest in their reply, cannot look around them at this present world and believe there is no God. Nor could they think for a moment that His grandeur is limited by our vision of Him or His creation. The greatest wonder of Heaven however isn’t the creation, but the Creator, the Savior of all who come to Him in true repentance.

Will Heaven be boring? How could Heaven be boring when looking upon the face of the Lord of lords and King of kings? How could Heaven be boring when beholding the One who paid our sin debt? The apostle Paul summed up Isaiah 64:4 and Isaiah 65:17 by saying:

“But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Great article!! Heaven will be amazing, because God will be there, Jesus will be there, and we will be able to worship them like never before and have unrestricted access to them. And we won't have any taint of sin, so we will be able to approach God with no barriers.

It was interesting in the article to think about what God has created. 16,000 different trees in the Amazon alone. I wouldn't be surprised if there were 160,000 different types of tree in Heaven, and just for starters! And I have an interesting though, unlike earth, we will be able to discuss everything with our Creator. Rather than simply learning a species of tree and having a quick look at it, we could discuss every tiny detail of that tree with it's Creator. Doing so would be one aspect of worship. And probably God will give us more intelligence so we can talk about such things with Him, and have greater appreciation of Him and more worship. And multiply that by every type of tree, flower, plant, landscape, music, architecture, literature, and maybe the odd truck, and train too ;) .

Rather than spending the majority of our lives on survival - earning a living, keeping clean, maintaining our possessions etc, we will spend all our time enjoying our Creator, and His creation in great detail. Service / work will be satisfying. And we will be able to do things we couldn't on earth - and all to God's glory. We have EVERYTHING to look forward to :).

The Universe, outside of this bubble called earth, is dead. We see no life and the atmosphere is deadly. This could be because the creation was cursed. And perhaps in the new creation, the entire universe will be teaming with life.

There is a very interesting verse...

Isaiah 9:7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

His peaceful government is going to increase for all eternity. And since the earth is finite, my strong suspicion is that it will increase beyond the limits of this earth. For eternity we will be going, "Where no man has gone before", but it won't be just a five year mission.

Imagine the living creatures and the exciting creation we will forever discover.

IT'S ALL REAL AND I CAN'T HARDLY WAIT,

I'm paraphrasing what the Apostle Paul said, but it's going to be truly spectacular beyond our wildest dreams. Our mortal minds cannot comprehend what we will experience in eternity. The abilities our immortal bodies possess will even transcend the amazing cosmic powers of the Marvel comic superheroes I used to love reading as a kid!

Thank you Jesus for the amazing eternity we have in store.

If you look at what it says in the Bible, rather than fanciful Christian folklore, you will find that there's not much description of what life in Heaven is like. We know the saved go there. We know we will be with Christ and reunited with saved loved ones. Maybe one or two other things that don't directly relate to what it feels like.

Faith implies trust. I'm willing to wait to find out the details.

Boring? I will go out on a limb and speculate that it is not.

I agree not boring we have An Awesome God. There will be plenty of things he will have us involved in. We will be doing a lot of Praise and Worship in heaven. Having lots of fellowship with our Heavenly family just like we do on RF. There is no place like our real home Heaven! :thumbup :thumbup

Wow, yes! We know that God is a creator, and the universe, while amazing, is rather empty. In the restored new creation I would imagine God will continue filling all of creation with life, and continually expanding His Kingdom. I would be surprised if what you have said were not the case. I have had similar thoughts, but you have expressed them perfectly.

When I read your post, I paused, and just the possibility of it filled me with worship for Christ. He is going to win and then glorify the Father and Himself like we have never seen before.

Our God is so creative...from intricate elements within a single cell in a body, to stars and nebulas in the heavens! I am sure this isn't all there is. God made the universe n all in it in only 6 days. He's been workin on Heaven for thousands of years!!!

God gave people creativity...art, music, poetry, etc etccc!!! And God isnt limited the way humans are...

There are probably reasons we get new bodies in Heaven....maybe with new senses...maybe to handle the amazing creativity of our God!! New colors, sounds, sights, etc!!! Cant wait to be in AWE for eternity!!!!!

Isaiah 9:7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end,
I have wondered what this verse means...how there can be no end???

I think of Solomon and all of his wisdom..he could solve problems, converse about any subject with authority, etc....
Wondering if we will learn wisdom in Heaven?? I feel sure we will increase our knowledge.....maybe forever??? Really it's mind blowing.

This life is only temporary, but it is so awesome to know by accepting the gift of salvation :fish we will live forever with him and all the saints. I am so glad that if we die before :fish comes back this is not the end of born again believers. We have new glorified bodies and will live forever!

I have to admit that in my younger years I thought heaven would be like a beautiful city that you would walk around in with not much to do. I even thought I would be mostly alone while doing so, I did realize some years ago that heaven would be vast and loved ones and new friends and some old ones too to explore all the wonders there

Wonder if we will interact or get to know the Angels?

Psalm37v4

Hated and laughed at by the world but loved by God
I wonder if people with artistic talent, like painters or even seamstresses, or sewists (Is that even a word?) Will have anything to do up there. It’s obvious that God gave some people the talent to paint, for instance. I wonder if they will be painting up there?

Or will there be games like dominoes? I know these are stupid questions and rather silly but these are the things I think about sometimes…
