New Wildfire In Boundary Waters Prompts More Area Closures

"MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Parts of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are closed due to a new wildfire in northern Minnesota.
The U.S. Forest Service says the Whelp Fire was caused by a lightning strike near Sawbill Lake in Cook County. As of Tuesday night, the fire was estimated to be between 10-20 acres.
Aircraft are dumping water on the fire, and crews will be on the ground battling the flames when conditions improve, officials say."

More Evacuations As NE Minnesota Wildfire Grows To 5 Square Miles

"Among the evacuees were 100 sled dogs from White Wilderness Sled Dog Adventures near Isabella. Owner Peter McClelland sent 50 of his dogs to his kennel near Ely and the rest to stay with fellow mushers. He said that his dogs were taking it in stride.
“The nice thing about the working dog or an animal you work with, you’re always used to doing weird things with them and traveling with them and camping with them,” McClelland said. “And so even though this is something the dogs have never done, they key in on you and they know they can trust you. And I know I can trust them.”"

I'm not anywhere near the fires, but the Boundary Waters, National Forests, etc. up north are near and dear to *everyone* here.

The fires here aren't anywhere near as big as the ones out west.

Well . . . the fires are getting bigger, a lot bigger :cry

NOAA Satellite Video Shows Wildfires Burning In Northern MN; Greenwood Fire Now Covers Nearly 26,000 Acres

"MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A satellite from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is giving us a good look at the wildfires burning in northern Minnesota.
NOAA tweeted footage captured from its GOES-16 satellite earlier this week. The short video shows several large wildfires, including the Greenwood Lake fire.
UPDATE: While numerous #wildfires have scorched the western U.S. this week, northern Minnesota has seen its own large wildfire burning across the region—the #GreenwoodFire, seen from @NOAA's #GOES16️ yesterday. At last report, it had doubled in size and now covers 19,000+ acres. pic.twitter.com/iCmhZAH0m6
— NOAA Satellites – Public Affairs (@NOAASatellitePA) August 24, 2021
When the footage was taken Monday, the Greenwood Lake fire was covering nearly 20,000 acres. It has since grown to nearly 26,000 acres, according to the latest from USDA Forest Service."

"There is rain in the forecast this week, but it’s expected to hit central Minnesota instead of the north.Officials say it’s likely these fires will burn until we get our first big winter snow.
The wildfires have prompted air quality alerts in northeastern Minnesota and the upper half of Wisconsin.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was closed Saturday for the first time in 45 years due to the fires. The closure was extended Tuesday through Sept. 3."

Dear God, please send rain to quench the wildfires and end the drought.
And please send the first big winter snow really early. Next week wouldn't be too soon

Some Of BWCA To Reopen As Firefighting Progresses

"BWCAW in the Tofte, LaCroix, and Kawishiwi Ranger Districts will reopen to the public for overnight and day use, but portions of Whelp and John Ek fire will remain closed due to active fire.
USFS says any permits that were issued for closed portions of the BWCAW will be cancelled and refunded through next Friday, September 10. Available permits will be reservable starting Thursday for entry beginning Saturday.
Authorities say that campfires will still not be allowed on any federal land.
Of the wildfires raging in northern Minnesota, the Greenwood Fire is still the largest, covering about 26,000 acres near the North Shore.
The fire in the Superior National Forest is 37% contained. Officials say 65 fires in the forest have burned about 45 square miles."

Parts of Boundary Waters to reopen as crews work to contain northern Minnesota wildfires

"Portions of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are set to reopen on Saturday, forest officials say.
The BWCA had been closed since Aug. 21 due to wildfires in the area, and the closure was most recently extended to Friday.
In a video update on Wednesday, Superior National Forest Supervisor Connie Cummins said while some much-needed rain fell across the state over the past week, the forest remains under extreme drought conditions.
Recent moderate weather conditions have given firefighters a leg up in the fight to contain the blazes."

Dear God, please send rain and snow and help the fire fighters extinguish the fires
