I am intrigued to hear your answers on this because many annihilations use this term to imply permanent death or annihilation. They also love to use Matthew 10:28 as evidence that God will destroy those who end up in Hell AKA The Lake Of Fire. The Word destroy in that verse seems to mean "ruin" not ceasing to exist.
My personal opinion is that the second death which is the Lake Of Fire is not being destroyed forever but being separated from God for all Eternity. When you look and study the Scriptures carefully, you come to find out that those who have not believed and not placed their faith and trust in Jesus Christ are referred to as "Dead" though they are alive.
Check these verses out.
Matthew 8: 21-22
21 Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Ephesians 2: 1-2
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience
Colossians 2:13
13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,
Ephesians 2:5
5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
It appears as though these verses are implying that even though a person may be alive, if they do not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior they are spiritually dead. Disconnected from God.
If they die in this state then they will not only die once but twice when the unbelieving dead will be resurrected with their indestructible bodies to spend eternity separated from God forever in the Lake of Fire. The damned are alive but they have died a second time, spiritually and physically lost in Hell for all Eternity.
John 17:3
3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
