Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that Western countries had scored an own goal by imposing sanctions against Russia over Ukraine which he said had led to a "deterioration of the economy in the West." Speaking on the state of Russia's domestic economy, Putin said that inflation was stabilizing and that retail demand in the country had normalized. Western countries have imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia's corporate and financial system since it sent troops into Ukraine on February 24 in what it calls a "special military operation."

Russia should use its budget to support the economy and liquidity in conditions of contracting lending activity even though the central bank's rate cuts will make lending cheaper, President Vladimir Putin said on Monday. Speaking to top government officials by a video link, said Russia should speed up the process of using national currencies in foreign trade under the new conditions.

Imperfect but forgiven
He's probably right about that, and Russia will get smarter about who they source with on account of this experience. Of course, it'll only matter short term... given Russia's future.

There's lots of talk int he news about how Putin lives in an alternative reality when it comes to what he is told about things from the Kremlin, etc. I think that is on display here. There are reports that they have had to halt production on missiles, tanks, etc. because of the sanctions. I have noticed that since this had start Putin will say things that are completely opposite from reality. In reality, the Russian economy is taking a beating. Russia doesn't produce much except for energy. Outside of that, they import stuff. The bad part of that is they could tell him stuff that was not true and cause him to do things that are drastic. There seems to be no win-win with the Russia situation. :ohno
