A Russian general was killed in a Ukrainian artillery strike over the weekend, a senior Ukrainian official claimed. Oleksiy Arestovych, a spokesperson to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said that roughly 100 Russian military personnel were killed in a massive artillery barrage on Saturday, according to a report by TheKyiv Post. The Ukrainian artillery strike is said to have targeted a field command post serving Russia’s Second Army near the city of Izyum in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine. The barraged struck more than 30 Russian armored vehicles, Arstovych claimed.

Among the dead, Arestovych said, was Maj. Gen. Andrei Simonov, commander of Russia’s electronic warfare units. Simonov is the second Russian general reportedly killed in the last week of April, and the tenth reportedly killed since the Russian invasion began on February 24th. Russia has yet to comment on the reports of Simonov’s death.

I think I read somewhere that part of why so many Russian generals are buying the farm (so to speak) is because of their lack of communications discipline, not using sufficient encryption even using regular old cellphones which allows the opposition to geo locate them very easily.

There are several documentaries on YouTube on the disaster for Russia that was the First Chechen War.

The Chechens, many of whom had served in the Soviet Army and spoke fluent Russian managed to hack into Russian comms and totally misdirect the Russians using legit call signs, laughing openly at the terrified Russians who were begging for help that was never able to arrive In a situation that resembled a Russian version of the ‘Black Hawk Down” episode the US experienced in Somalia (with a lost Armored column in Grozny as opposed to a downed helicopter.)

It was very creepy to hear. If I was a young Russian conscript I probably would have given up hope at that point.

Sounds like the Russian Army doesn’t keep a “Lessons Learned” binder handy. I hope they don‘t.
