Turkey may blackmail NATO to prevent Finland, Sweden from joining - analysis
Finland and Sweden have not joined NATO in the past, but Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led them to consider it.

Turkey’s far-right ruling AKP party is looking to use Ankara’s NATO membership to blackmail the defensive pact into catering to Ankara’s orders. Turkey has long used its membership of NATO as a blank check for human-rights abuses and invasions, often running counter to the values of NATO.

For instance, Turkey is the world’s worst jailer of journalists and has ethnically cleansed Kurdish and other minorities from illegally occupied Afrin, an area of Syria it took over in 2018. Turkey also backs Hamas, a terrorist organization. However, Turkey now believes it can use its NATO membership to prevent Finland and Sweden from joining, potentially weakening the alliance at a crucial time as Russia has invaded Ukraine. Russia’s threats have caused Finland and Sweden to rush into NATO’s arms. Previously reticent about joining a military alliance, the two countries are now worried about Russia’s bullying and threats.

Turkey, which also bullies and threatens its neighbors and other NATO countries, such as Greece, tends to side with Russia. While Turkey did sell drones to Ukraine, it also buys the S-400 system from Russia and is not keen on sanctioning Russian oligarchs or companies. Turkey is thus a key partner of Moscow, part of its larger alliance with authoritarian regimes in the world. Ankara has worked with Iran to get around sanctions in the past, for instance.

All really good reasons to bounce Turkey right out of the NATO club on their collective ear or rear whichever hits the pavement first.

And here's another great reason right from the Turkish govt's own site explaining that they are "Dialogue Partners" in the SCO which is a NATO type organization in direct OPPOSITION TO NATO!!!!! sigh

Assuming Putin and Erdogan are as close as I think. I'm guessing Turkey will bend after they get some concessions that will benefit them and I'm thinking Putin (ex-KGB), would want his friend at the NATO table to take notes for him. And Turkey is the head of NATO's Very High Readiness Task Force (brilliant) so any emergency military response would be funneled through Turkey.

Also I believe UK has signed a security agreement with Finland and Sweden recently. So regardless of Finland and Sweden joining NATO, If Russia attacked either, UK would respond per their agreement, which would in kind likely trigger NATO being involved once Russia attacked UK assets.

Long Story short, I THINK Erdogan is gonna vote yes, just after he gets all he can for the delay.

It's all ridiculous.

Although not openly linked to the NATO standoff by Turkish officials," writes Wilks, "Ankara may be attempting to use the issue to strengthen its hand in other areas. After it was kicked out of the US-led F-35 fighter jet program in 2019 over its acquisition of Russian-made air defense missiles, Turkey called for Washington to provide modernization kits for its F-16 fighter fleet as well as 40 of the latest version of the warplane."
