As a kid, Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie recalls, he visited a VA hospital at Christmastime.

"One of my fondest memories growing up, we used to sing Christmas carols at the VA hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina," Wilkie told The Daily Signal, sitting in a 10th-floor office at VA headquarters on Vermont Avenue Northwest, overlooking the White House.

"Something as simple and as decent as that was being stopped," he said. "With the support of the president, we just said enough is enough."

Wilkie grew up at Fort Bragg, the son of an Army artillery commander. He himself served in both the Navy and Air Force reserves, and as a Pentagon official.

Since becoming VA secretary a little more than a year ago, he has returned to North Carolina.

"I was in my hometown. We have a beautiful chapel in the old VA hospital. And I walked in and there were no Bibles," the secretary said. "It had been stripped of the symbols of religion."

The VA revised directives to permit religious literature, symbols, and displays at agency facilities following a string of incidents in recent years in which individual medical centers banned Christmas carols and a Christmas tree, chapels removed Bibles, and chaplains faced restraints on religious expression.

Generally, the VA had inconsistent policies across the country.

Officials designed the changes to protect the religious freedom of veterans and their families.

The new guidelines, which went into effect last month, referred to the recent Supreme Court ruling allowing a cross-shaped memorial to World War I dead to continue standing on public land in Bladensburg, Maryland.

The high court's decision highlighted the important role that religious symbols play in the lives of Americans and their consistency with constitutional principles.

"The military culture has been part of my being, an important part of what I believe," Wilkie told The Daily Signal. "I've seen the effects of combat, both in uniform and out of uniform."

That military culture in which he grew up, Wilkie said, also prioritizes the "ability of our troops to worship, their right to worship, their right to have access to chaplains, and to be free to celebrate their faith." He added:

Now, moving over to VA, I consider the spiritual well-being of our veterans, their spiritual health, to be just as important as the medical competence and technical competence of our doctors and nurses. They should have that fundamental right available to them to access chaplains, to access their Bibles....

I pray our Lord returns for us soon. Once Trump is out of office, be it in one year or five, and the liberals once again have the presidency, there will be no bibles in hotel rooms either. Not only chaplains will be restricted in what they say, but also doctors and nurses. We are already seeing the beginnings of this. It wouldn't even surprise me if we would be seeing book burnings, as happened in Hitler's day. There is just so much hate out there for anything having to do with God. I'm thankful that today, there are changes being made to get those bibles back into the chapels of the VA hospitals. Our good men who so bravely served our country deserve to be able to worship freely and have access to God's Word.

I hope Trump gets 4 more years. He's doing so much good now, and it seems that his administration is hitting on all cylindars and gaining speed. He's accomplishing so much that his enemies don't seem able to keep up with him. Thank you Lord, for giving us this President, for a time. I dread the day when globalists gain a majority in Congress and the Presidency.

Freed By Christ to Serve Christ
I am so glad he is doing the right and just thing for our veterans here!!! Every time, he does something like this Obama's hair catches on fire!! And all his cronies burn ever hotter with the fires of hell to come against him. If he does not win next year, the socialist dems will do there best to do the opposite of what he is doing (maybe up to seven times worse, you know what I mean). So we must treasure and enjoy this precious time that he is still in power and being a blessing to Christians and religious freedom.

Pence: 'The Bible stays' at veterans hospital facing lawsuit

Vice President Mike Pence weighed in on a First-Amendment lawsuit challenging a Bible on display at a New Hampshire veterans hospital, saying under the current administration, "VA hospitals will not be religion-free zones."

"We will always respect the freedom of religion of every veteran of every faith," Pence said in a speech addressing the American Legion National Convention in Indianapolis on Wednesday. "And my message to the New Hampshire VA hospital is this: 'The Bible stays.'"

The military religious freedom foundation that originally objected to the Bible called the president a "repulsive and repellent fundamentalist Christian" bully.

Blessed Hope-Prepare To Fly!
It is awesome to have a President who stands up for allowing Bibles which is nothing to be ashamed of any way. I never let anyone threaten me about saying Merry Christmas or anything when it comes to my faith. I really don't like it when I see people write or say Merry Xmas. They are disrespecting my :fish.
