The Seriousness of God

The word itself means something that is not light; it is grave, with a sense of urgency and solemnity that behooves the situation it is applied to. The very word has gravity to it, and that gravity conveys the importance of the word. It is not a light word, and using it is intended to describe situations that are somber or require thought. It gives cause for apprehension, and is of a critical nature.

I'm going to get to the point straightaway: there are too many who claim the name of Christ that do NOT take God seriously. From the Emergent church, with their "experiences", to lukewarm, "christians" who do little more than sit in church one day a week and "give God his time", far too many are NOT taking God at his word, and they are certainly NOT taking him seriously. I have heard one too many times "Oh, well God is love", or "God understands", as if understanding and condoning sin were one in the same....

And THAT is a TRAGIC mistake.

Before I go any further, let's be CRYSTAL CLEAR on something: yes, God IS love. God tells us so in 1 John chapter 4. But love does NOT mean that God tolerates us doing whatever we please. We forget the other aspects of God, as well as the fact that his love does NOT cancel out his righteousness, or his hatred of sin. And as a point of fact, God is DEADLY serious on his hatred of sin; we see this in the way he treated Israel and Judah when they continually fell away from him and turned to idols:

"As a thief is disgraced when he is caught, so the house of Israel is disgraced— they, their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets. They say to wood, 'You are my father,' and to stone, 'You gave me birth.' They have turned their backs to me and not their faces; yet when they are in trouble, they say, 'Come and save us!' Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah. Why do you bring charges against me? You have all rebelled against me," declares the LORD." (Jeremiah 2:26-29, NIV)

By the time Jeremiah stepped onto the scene, no one in Judah was taking God seriously anymore. Gone were the days of Hezekiah, who had lead one of the greatest revivals of worship in the land of Judah. And Israel, the northern kingdom, had already been annihilated by the Assyrians in a stroke of judgment by the Lord. All that was left was tiny Judah, and she was no better than her northern sister:

I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery. " (Jeremiah 3:8, NIV)

The people of the two nations forgot that God is not just a God of love, but of JUSTICE and RIGHTEOUSNESS. That he knows the condition of the human heart, and that in it is all sorts of vileness and wickedness:

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? " (Jeremiah 17:9, KJV)

Yet, in spite of knowing that, they continued in their sin. They thought that God's forbearance was essentially a permission slip to sin as much as they wanted, provided that they made the "appropriate sacrifices".

They were WRONG.

God ended up destroying both wayward nations, sending Israel into oblivion and Judah into exile for a generation to Babylon, where they had more than their fill of idols, pagan rituals, and ungodly things.

And that brings us to today.

In this day and age, the veneer of civilization may have advanced, with all the modern amenities and shiny toys, but the heart of man is still wicked and vile. Nothing has changed but the outer trappings. Today, we still hunt after idols that can give us our base desires, our fleshly longings. We don't seek a God who can feed us spiritually; who can fill the emptiness that all the material possessions and worldly things cannot. And FAR too many are only "playing" at being Christians; they seek to enjoy the things of this life AND the benefits of Heaven. They indulge in things that have the appearance of evil when the bible tells us to shun all appearances of thus; they talk, look and move like this world, and a great many are so biblically illiterate, they think "Job" is something you do to earn money!!! We think evil in our hearts, yet we proclaim the Gospel; we backbite and slander, yet with that same tongue praise God on Sunday, only to go back home and not think about him till next week.

Did it ever occur to us that God is SERIOUS?!

"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9, KJV)

Here, the Lord is telling us EXACTLY what he is doing: he is NOT simply allowing us to do whatever we please, but he is giving us a chance to return to him from our sins and come back to him.

We would do well to keep this verse in mind:

"For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. " (1 Peter 4:17-19 NIV)

God came to us in love, to save us from our sins. However, it is not the "love" depicted in valentines day cards, but the true love that someone has for another's welfare and well being that led him to die for us on the cross. To put it another way: for our very creator to perish in our place on a rough-hewn wooden cross, how serious do you take that to be?

I take it to be DEATHLY serious, because sin itself is SERIOUS:

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23, KJV)

We are saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit; in that regard, I believe that a person cannot lose their salvation if they are truly saved and continue to walk with the Lord. Works cannot save us, and we will often fall on our faces. God knows we are human and that we will sin; he is NOT looking to "bounce" anyone out of the Book of Life. But I also believe that there are many out there that think whistling off a little prayer and then going about their daily thing still makes them saved. As I have said before: it is a matter of the heart, and God knows our hearts whether they be towards him or not. God is far from stupid, and he cannot be fooled by outward appearances of flashy things. He sees within us.

In these closing hours, far too many have fallen away from the pure words of the Lord. They do not take the Bible seriously, they do not take salvation seriously, and they do not take the Lord seriously. They think it is some kind of game to be played, and that they may dabble in whatever they like, so long as they plaster a cross on it and package it as "christian."

Well, it is time for us to be SERIOUS about this!!!

If we have the faith that we claim to have, we had better put it into action; if we believe, we had better practice what we preach. If we tell others that lusting after someone is the same as committing adultery, then we had better watch our own thought of malice and despite when interacting with others. If we truly care about others, then we are NOT to hold them at arm's length!! And if we say that we are God's children, then we had better behave as his children, giving him alone the glory and the praise, and NOT living for ourselves!!!

This is NO game we are playing; all of this is FOR REAL. And if we are not serious about it, if those who claim the name of Christ are not serious about it, then we will see EXACTLY how SERIOUS God will be about it when we meet him.

If you want to know how serious God is, just ask Sodom and Gomorrah...

Wow, is THAT a stern exhortation! And a badly needed one in the church today. Thank you so much for posting this. God most definitely is using you, bro.

Tuesday I had 40 yds. of sand dumped on my front yard to mix in with my garden clay. Moved about 10 yds. Tuesday then it rained.

Thursday it dried enough to move the rest of the sand I planned for the garden.

Along about 2:00 I remembered that I had told a brother that I would come and help him with some home renovations. But I was in the middle of moving the dirt and didn't want to stop since it was starting to drizzle.

Then I thought of a verse, "Keep your promise even to your own hurt" I ignored it.

At around 3 a 250 pound grader dropped on my right big toe. Even To My Hurt. Did God take me to the woodshed? I think so.

If you are a true believer God will eventually stop just talking.

I heard that when sheep keep on going astray the Shepherd will break his legs on purpose. ---(Not that you are going astray). God will MAKE us lie down in green pastures and during that time HE will be our Healer, Provider, Caregiver and Sustainer and WE will finally LEARN how much he really cares by LISTENING instead of the woodshed. Psalms 40:6 "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but my ears you have pierced;
burnt offerings and sin offerings
you did not require.

Once again Robert, you bless us with your ever present knowledge and wisdom, guidance, and - sometimes, as Matt5:4 put it, "stern exhortations".

There are so many forums out there today that get heavily into "End Times". All the discussions, debates, it just goes on and on. Yet, the MAIN things in our Christian walk are forgotten.

That's why I STILL say, and I know I've probably said it a hundred times already, I thank GOD for this forum!

Robert, thank you for the exhortation brother. You are so right that being a child of the Most High God should be taken seriously.

I am so Blessed when I read your postings :nod

and I agree with MikeD, we do need to focus more on our Christian Walk along with being Watchmen on the Wall :nod

God's serious judgment on sin and those who continue in it is, in fact, a product of His love. He could not BE love and also allow sin to reign and twist the lives of those whom He loves. The Bible says in both Old (Leviticus 11:44; 19:2; 20:7) and New (1 Peter 1:15-16) Testaments that God is holy and we, too, must be holy. So, we are thus commanded to be like God. And if God is love then we must be like Him in that same regard. As He loves man, so must we love man. And that love means we cannot rejoice in injustice, despise or ignore the downtrodden, nor—most importantly—ourselves act in any selfish manner. If we are to love man, we must hate sin—for sin destroys man. Let there be no mistake about anything Robert has written in the OP, nor what I have slightly expanded upon here.

Yet God calls us to love the sinner and hold out to him the good news of forgiveness and eternal restoration to fellowship with God in Jesus Christ. Those who respond will be saved. Those who refuse will be lost. But it is not for us to decide upon whom that judgment will fall. Except in one regard— ourselves. We must judge ourselves. (1 Corinthians 11:31) Let us be sure that we are serious with God, that we truly desire His will for our life above our own will, and that we indeed trust Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 13:5) When we do so, we have the confidence that, as His, we are eternally secure.

Robert is quite correct in this matter. Please note Hebrews 12:14-15

14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
How we represent the Lord is absolutely critical! Christians have NO BUSINESS backing or justifying the likes of Ted Nugent or Rush Limbaugh in their hate speech! Anyone backing the likes of such unbelievers in the interest of politics or any other excuse is slandering the Lord and everything He stands for.

:thumbup Preparing His Way ...God is calling His People to Himself ..Sunday Our Pastor took on the Giant of Porn and I was in awe because I see it as God Purifying His Bride despite all the apostate voices. There is a growing URGENCY in the remnant and it's having an effect. I think even the BUMP of this message was God's Goodness leading to repentance:preach

Jesus Christ is Lord
Amen! Thanks for bumping this Robert. Robert's message has some real meat in it
and Adrian did a wonderful job of expounding it further. God is awesome
and I'm so blessed to be a part of this board where God is using the brothers
and sisters here to stand for truth in a world where truth is no longer popular.
God is serious and he is serious about sin. He has provided a way for us to be
cleansed of sin and to walk in the newness of life through his son Jesus Christ.
God doesn't want to neither will he, wink at sin. He will cleanse you of it and
deliver you from the power of it if you let him. :nod

Freed By Christ to Serve Christ
It is amazing how many mistake the long-suffering of God as a license to sin.

Agreeing with the others in thanking you, Robert for bumping this thread. I hadn't seen it before either as it was relatively buried in the archives when I came on board.
Thanks bro.
