The Baby Formula Nightmare

The Baby Formula Nightmare
By Todd Strandberg

I first noticed there was something odd about baby formula when Walmart installed cameras to constantly monitor the shelves holding the product. It struck me as odd that this item would be a high theft risk. About half the sales of baby formula come from government-provided funds. I learned that you should never doubt Washington’s ability to turn a simple positive plan into a disaster.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) was established as a permanent program in 1974 to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk. This mission is carried out by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, nutrition education (including breastfeeding promotion and support), and referrals to health and other social services.

There is a major crisis in the feeding of America’s babies right now because parents in some areas can’t get baby formula. A few months ago, a major producer of formula – Abbott Labs – shut down its main production facilities in Sturgis, Michigan, which had been contaminated with the bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii, killing two babies and injuring two others.

If you thought the contamination at the Sturgis plant would send Abbott Labs into panic mode, you would be wrong. The CEO of Abbott Labs has only made a few general statements about the incident.

Abbott has denied its formula is to blame, with the company telling Bloomberg that “There is no evidence to link our formulas to these infant illnesses.”

“Abbott called the recall a “short-term hindrance” and said it was working closely with the regulator and has begun implementing corrective actions and enhancements to the facility.

Abbott shares rose 2.4% to $122.90 in morning trade as some analysts said the comments during the conference call allayed worries over the recall. Despite the recall and supply chain issues, Abbott beat quarterly profit and revenue estimates in the first quarter.

Abbott Labs, Mead Johnson, and Nestle produce 98% of the formula in the U.S. This monopoly is why Abbott Labs doesn’t need to worry about losing any market share. The country has been carved up where one of the three firms will dominate a region. Most states only allow women to buy baby formula from one company, though each company offers a bunch of different brands.

To save money, the government requires states to hold auctions to get the lowest price for formula. The problem is that state agencies use a complex rebating system to give the contract for the entire state to one manufacturer, and that contract can only be changed once every four years.

This rebate system distorts the entire market in a state because it’s just not worth having alternative formulas on a retail shelf if half of the buyers simply cannot purchase those formulas. As a result, the market tips to the WIC supplier, and that supplier raises prices on non-WIC recipients and does so by between 26-35%.

Abbott Labs, Mead Johnson, and Nestle use lobbyists that work with the FDA to keep out any newcomers. Even though baby formula from Europe is much cheaper, no Congress member has any incentive to change the rules.

Baby Formula made in a third-world nation may actually be safer. According to Healthy Babies Bright Futures, baby formula made by the big guys in the U.S. is full of dangerous brain-altering heavy metals. HBBF tested thirteen different baby formulas, and every single one had “detectable levels of arsenic, cadmium, lead and/or mercury,” which are all considered to be neurotoxic, interfering with brain development and “causing permanent IQ reductions in children.”

Moreover, FDA inspections of Abbott plants are obviously a disaster. Abbott had old and dirty equipment making formula, falsified records, deceived regulators, had a bad product tracing, and did not fix problems after discovery. FDA inspectors noticed problems with the plant in September but ignored them. Then, a whistleblower told the FDA of these problems in October, but regulators didn’t even bother to interview him/her until December.

What is taking place in the baby formula trade is certainly occurring in a hundred other industries. If America had a greater moral foundation, this crisis would not be taking place. It stands as one more indication of why judgment is coming to our nation.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it” (Proverbs 9:10-12).

I wasn't able to breastfeed my son. Every time I did, some would come back up projectile style. What went through came out as watery diarrhea. The doctor either couldn't tell me or wouldn't tell me why. I ended up putting him on formula. I initially had a little trouble with breastfeeding my daughter but was successful after a few weeks and never had to supplement with formula. With both kids, they tried to push me to formula feed instead of encouraging breastfeeding and maybe trying to help figure out what was going on with my son to cause his issues. I bet the medical community is still trying to push mamas to just give the babies a bottle instead of trying to help them successfully breastfeed. And now this happens. I do understand that some really can't and have no choice but to give formula. I say fed is best. We're all trying to do what is best for our kids. But somebody really dropped the ball on this and there is no excuse for it. I think it was intentional.

I'm glad my kids are older so I don't have to worry about this. I can only imagine what these parents are feeling.

I was fortunate in 1984 and 1985 to breastfeed both my daughter and son. It is a shame what is going on to make it hard for the mothers to get baby formula. I :pray this gets resolved quickly, and doesn't happen again. I heard on Hannity that the baby formula was shipped to the border. Isn't that a nice :cry way to treat our citizens?

There was no contamination found. Either in the plant nor in any of recalled baby formula. The only reason Abbott voluntarily recalled the formula because the initial connection (they thought) was that the two babies that died had the same formula. The news as usual and government as usual don’t tell you the actual story. The government in particular will point fingers at others.

You can't expect the truth out of liars, and it is the usual blame game. They won't be held accountable.

My MIL had the same problem. She fed her babies goats milk with brewers yeast mixed in (possibly other items) and her kiddos did great on that.

I couldn't breast feed. I tried, but couldn't produce enough milk (like after the first week, I could make only about an ounce per hour), baby was constantly crying, I was constantly trying to feed him, and it was miserable. So doctor told me to use formula and it was such a relief. If I had a baby right now, he'd be starving, so I'm glad we're well past that stage.

I pray that babies who need formula will be able to get it.

Thank the Lord I was able to exclusively breastfeed Peter for his first year. I can't imagine parents with foster babies, or if they can't breastfeed. I have been able to find formula online from Europe, quite easily. They are more expensive but it's much better than the stuff in the stores. I'm assuming moms with WIC have to buy the store formula and can't be choosy.

Abbot has their fingers in a lot of pies outside of baby formula.

About three years ago, I was able to have a neurostimulator put in my back. It is a battery operated device that is inserted in the lower back with fibers that go up the spine. It blocks the signals sent to the brain regarding pain, due in my case, due to degenerative disc disease, and I am able to function without a lot of pain from my lower back. The battery is installed in my hip and, hopefully, I won’t need another one anytime soon. What bugs me is they, Abbot, are the same producers of the baby formula rip-off!

If you look at their website, they make a lot of expensive, high tech doo dads like mine to help cardiac patients, diabetic care, diagnostic products, neuro modulation and other meds.

Makes me wonder what else they are into and up to?

Have you had back surgery? You are the 2nd person in 24 hours I've heard had a good experience with a nerve stimulator in their back. Hubs has had 3 back surgeries (2 were fusions) and we go to a new doc in a couple of weeks to find out what is next. He is miserable and we know he needs more fusion, but I'm worried it won't stop his pain.

Soy messes with hormones, and we feed babies that in formula, and to our kids in school (soybean burgers). There are so many things I would do different if I could . . . .
I hear Nutrisystem for losing weight has soy in their food. I don't eat their food just heard this.

Yes. And it has been a blessing! They made me do a trial with it for a week…worn on the outside and that worked, so I was set for surgery. It works very well! I vowed that if it came to fusion, then I would just endure because of so many friends who’ve had fusions done resulting in misery.

I highly recommend he consider talking over his options with a neuro stimulator with his doctor! I control it with an iPod and it can be adjusted for whatever feels best for him. The doctor will have a rep that will be with you through the process and available for you if you should need any adjustment, I have found them to be very accommodating.

I'm tired of people bashing people for using "seed oil" products. They're cheap! And I also had to formula feed my kids. I needed to. The fact they had soy in there was something I couldn't help. I've looked recently at the grocery store and true sticks of butter are over $6 for a 2 cup stick!! And that was the store brand! For that price I get 6 cups of margarine. It's not a contest. I'm getting margarine. I only use it for baking anyways and not as spread.

I also keep hearing people say that doctors are trying to strong-arm women into buying formula. Maybe in the States but in Canada I got no end of grief for giving my babies formula. It's been 8 years since I had to formula feed my youngest and people still say, "oh, why didn't you try this? Or that?" I can't go back in time! And it's so stressful when your baby is always crying and they aren't peeing anymore because they're so dehydrated and you have post partum depression. My kids are rarely sick and they are not remotely chubby. Formula was available and I didn't believe in torturing myself over breastfeeding.

I know people want to be healthy but I wish they would stop being so militant about everything.

My dear departed Daddy came up in the depression. He thought baby formula was liquid gold after having seen babies and children so hungry and sickly...the mothers didn't have enough food to produce good milk, not to mention there was often a new baby every year.

My husband and his siblings came up drinking some kind of rice water. They all grew into big, strapping people.

Hey MapleLeaf -
Greetings from the South. Please don't take what I said about soy in formula as "bashing". That was absolutely not my intent. I LOVE CANADA and have been to Lake of the Woods many times (Kenora, ON). I just meant our foods that are supposed to be ok to give our babies and kids, have turned out to have issues. Soy really does affect hormones (estrogen).
I tried to breastfeed all 3 of my kids, but had to go on formula eventually because I didn't produce a lot. I tried, I really did, and it is HARD. I also worked full time, which I have regrets about too, but we made it through.
Everyone does what you have to do to get through life.
I can tell you, that I have figured out since 2016, that various foods cause me health problems. The food pyramid I was taught in 7th grade is UPSIDE DOWN, our brains need fat to function. Sugar and grains cause inflammation. The diabetes diet that every doctor gives his patient is full of carbs - total junk, and makes the patient need more and more medication. We (Americans) have been sold a bill of goods on foods and medicine and it is sad. We do what we think is right, but we've been given wrong information by our gov. I have a picture of bread ingredients: Canada white bread vs American white bread. I don't know how to attach it or I would, but the difference in the ingredients is astounding. I took the picture during a trip we made to LOTW in 2016. It tells you a lot about all the bad stuff they put in our food and it isn't allowed in other countries. . . And eating healthy is terribly expensive, how messed up is that?
And I love junk food, I just don't eat it very much . . .
Take care. :usaheart

Thank you. I am going to bring it up at his next appointment (June). I know he is going to have to have another fusion because his spine is collapsing. He has shrunk several inches in less than a year. I just want a Plan D, E & F if this surgery doesn't help.
