Scientists Sound Alarm on ‘Imminent Radiological Threat’ at Chinese Nuclear Plant

This was in the Taiwan news yesterday:

“Framatone, the French company that helped build the plant, warned of an “imminent radiological threat” in its efforts to contact U.S. officials for a waiver that would grant the company permission to share American technical know-how in handling the matter.”

Makes me think that the US has technical expertise in this area that the French want them to share with China.

Another disturbing part of the article was:

“The Taishan Nuclear Power Plant, located in Guangdong Province’s Taishan, was first said to be leaking fission gas by Framatone in a cable sent on June 3 to the U.S. Department of Energy requesting the waiver. In an alarming development, a cable sent on June 8 said the Chinese authorities had doubled the radiation limits at the plant and in nearby areas so as to keep the reactor going.”

Doubled the radiation limits...

Instead of sharing the information and technology, the U.S. should send people there to use it (in defense of ourselves and others around the world) :tappingfoot
And, we need to charge them. A lot :tappingfoot

This is the kind of information/technology that has direct military application and should not be shared with a country that has already attacked us with [unmentionable topic] :tappingfoot

The self-centered weasals that run the Chinese dictatorship had better hope that they don't have a reactor leak. I don't know whether they are familiar with The Boy Who Cried Wolf but they have managed to make the rest of the civilized world see them for what they are: land-grabbing liars. I have to wonder whether the most beneficent nations would be in a hurry to lend a helping hand if it were possible. Chernobyl still has one uncommissioned reactor but the heat that has caused forest fires in the area is not radioactive. Nonetheless, the animal mutations and human tragedies that have continued for years are an abomination. Russia covered the plant with a metal "tent" years ago to try to stop the escape of radioactivity that would never have been produced if the creation had not taken apart the Creator's Swiss watch to see how it worked.
The United States would not deny help to the potentially dying, but in light of the death originating in Wuhan, I would think an appropriate service fee should be paid - IN ADVANCE.

Dear God, please don't let this be another Fukushima, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, etc. Please bless whoever's working on this and fix the problem before anyone or anything gets hurt, sick, or killed.

Please also bless and protect the Christians there and bring everyone there to saving faith in Your Son, Jesus Christ.

:pray :pray :amen
Lumping 3 Mile Island in with Fukushima and Chernobyl is mis-guided.

I know the differences between all of them, but didn't want to be accused of thinking/saying/implying my country's nuclear power industry was perfect.
There are a bunch more incidents/accidents in the nuclear power industry in several countries, too, but didn't think necessary to list more.

It was totally appropriate to include Three Mile Island. There have been many claims of illnesses and birth defects filed allegedly caused by the radiation leaks. The dome nearly exploded. It killed all development of nuclear plants in America for THIRTY YEARS. This left us more dependent on other sources of energy and we slipped behind to where we are now: subjected to idiot politicians who kill our clean energy natural gas pipeline from Canada and approve the pipeline from Russia THROUGH UKRAINE to Germany.

We do need to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ in China because persecution is ramping up, but the cell phone issue might not quite be as bad as it sounds to western ears. Last time I was there, all cell phones and cell phone service was pre-paid. If you lose your phone (or it's stolen) you can register and get a new one, with a new number (which is tied to the SIM card) to replace it, but you're out of luck on the money you've put into the old phone. Don't have enough money to pay for cell service this month? You'll be cut off and your number sold to someone else. Even I went through several phone numbers while I was living there.
That's a relief to know that it might not be as dire as it sounds. But why did the cell phone account terminations happen over the course of just a short time? They apparently do have some turnover as you have suggested but actual termination of accounts? And all once? A number of experts on China were somewhat mystified. But then the story just disappeared down the memory hole.

Yeah--but I don't think that they are that stupid. It was in the interests of certain parties to try to destroy the energy industry in N. America. Bribery and blackmail is a way of life in "persuading" legislators to vote your way. That is one of the main reasons for pushing decentralization of power away from the central governments and term limits.

The most significant safety-related cooperation internationally is through the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO). This was formed over a couple of years following the Chernobyl accident to maximize the safety and reliability of nuclear plant operation. It held its inaugural meeting in Moscow in 1989. With regional centers in Atlanta, Moscow, Paris and Tokyo and a coordinating center in London, WANO links all 115 operators of nuclear power plants in 34 countries.
This is why the U.S has to share information, because it is a member of WANO - https://www.wano.info/

Another example of an organization whose name starts with "World", formed because of a tragedy, then becoming untrustworthy and of little use (unless America pays or resolves the sticky problems). Trump got us out of global groups for this reason. Biden is now busily getting us re-upped into these murky international clubs. The only good things I can think of with "World" or "International" in their names:
World Series
International House of Pancakes

Now in Europe, Biden has managed to denigrate the Republican Party and Donald Trump on the world stage. Not only is that an unwritten violation of American politics, it is low, cheap, childish, and mean-spirited. And Biden is there to assure everyone that "America is back". Translation: "Let the abuse resume".

China Insists Reportedly Leaky Nuclear Plant Is Totally Fine

Chinese officials and state media continued insisting Tuesday that everything is “normal” at the Taishan nuclear reactor in Guangdong province, dismissing all reports to the contrary as anti-China hysteria.

The French company that helped build the reactor is thoroughly examining the buildup of inert gases in its cooling system and some outside experts are troubled by the data released so far.

China’s state-run Global Times chided American left-wing broadcaster CNN for sensationalizing the problem at the reactor by publishing a letter sent by French company Framatome to the U.S. Department of Energy last week. The Chinese paper insisted the Taishan plant is running smoothly and dismissed French concerns about reduced safety standards by insisting China has better standards than American or European nuclear plants:

On Monday, Framatome told AFP that “the plant is currently operating within the safety parameters,” based on the data available. It said it is “supporting resolution of a performance issue” at the plant.

Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University, told the Global Times that China’s third generation nuclear reactors, represented by the Taishan nuclear power plant and the Hualong One technology, have higher safety standards compared with second generation reactors like most currently in use in Europe and the US.

He also said that with the Chinese government’s focus on nuclear development, it would be “fatal” for any developers that don’t carefully implement the country’s nuclear safety standards.

....

Other observers believe the gas issue might be caused by deteriorating fuel rods, a problem that afflicts one or two percent of the fuel rods in use worldwide and is usually handled by routine safety procedures.

Framatome’s parent company EDF said on Monday that the buildup of inert gases in the cooling system of Taishan’s No. 1 reactor is a “known phenomenon, studied and provided for in the reactor operating procedures.”

The company suggested it could be caused by a minor issue with the nuclear fuel rods or their seals and said it was not clear if the reactor would need to be shut down in order to address the problem.

This is probably the major point of contention between the French and Chinese partners in the enterprise, as power supplied by Taishan is crucial to the massive industrial hubs that surround it, and power from regional hydroelectric dams is running below normal. The No. 2 reactor on site was only recently brought back online after an overhaul.

EDF and Framatome could be concerned that China’s state-owned CGN power company, which owns 70 percent of the plant, is unwilling to shut the reactor down, and Chinese officials could suppress any information that indicated a shutdown was the safest course of action.
