RICK WARREN MINISTRY RECOMMENDS MANTRA CENTERING PRAYER
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Oct 5, 2011 in AM Missives, Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism, Current Issues, Features, Rick Warren, Southern Baptist Convention

The other day in Tim Keller On Greatest Names In Praying And Spirituality at Apprising Ministries I shared my plan. That’s to continue to give you reason to be concerned about the corrupt Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism (CSM) ala the Living Spiritual Teacher and Quaker mystic Richard Foster and his spiritual twin, Southern Baptist minister Dallas Willard, slithering around—even within the Young, Restless, and Reformed camp.

You may remember a little over a year ago in Evangelicalism Now Reaping What It Has Sown I reminded you that none other than fellow Living Spiritual Teacher and Emergent Church guru Brian McLaren told you they were “key mentors” of the Emerging Church. [1]

So what did you think they were mentoring these Emergent leaders in? This foolish divination crawls along the floor of your evangelical churches—particularly spread by ill-trained worship ministers—as so-called Spiritual Formation and then serves to create an effete form of pseudo-Christianity.

Take a serious look at those who continue in it and you’ll notice a proliferation of spiritual sissies afraid of their own shadow. One current example of how spiritually spineless people who dabble in this occultic divination of CSM become would be the Elephant Room 2 and the heretical T.D. Jakes.

As we survey the battleground in the visible church from this vantage point I tell you, now look over at Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism Invades Evangelicalism With Rick Warren And Kay Warren Leading The Charge. If you can see, then let me point you to the below.

The Twitter account for Rick Warren’s Ministry Toolbox tweeted a bit ago today:

When follow the link we’re taken to the RWMT website and the article Centering Prayer Trusts Jesus Brings Transformation. That’s right; Protholic Purpose Driven Pope Rick Warren is now joining Gospel Coalition Council Member Dr. Tim Keller in openly recommending Contemplative/Centering Prayer (CCP):

As I’ve said many times before this is the crown jewel of CSM; CCP is actually transcendental meditation in an altered state of consciousness lightly sprayed with Christian terms. In closing this, for now, I leave you with apostate Roman Catholic CS teacher Thomas Keating and quasi-Buddhist Ken Wilbur.

They are discussing the fruit of this practice of CSM. Welcome to your evangelical nightmare:

Rick Warren Recommends Pagan Mantra "Technique" For Christians
Posted by Christine Pack

Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life and pastor of Saddleback church in California, made a tweet today recommending a pagan mantra "technique" for Christians to do when they pray, with a link to a site that teaches exactly how to do it. First, here's the tweet:

And here is where the link from Rick Warren's tweet takes you so that you can get step-by-step instructions for "centering" your life on Jesus:

Now, for comparison purposes only, please compare the above Centering Prayer "technique" recommended by Rick Warren to this one from a Buddhist website:

Now, for comparison purposes only, please compare the above Centering Prayer "technique" recommended by Rick Warren to this one from a Buddhist website:

Why am I showing what Buddhist meditation looks like? Well, as regular readers of this blog know, I came out of the New Age, and while in the New Age I practiced many different types of mystical meditation (Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, pagan, etc.). And because of this, I can therefore attest that what Rick Warren is promoting is exactly like what I practiced as a New Ager doing mystical meditation. The only thing that differs between so-called "Christian mysticism" and pagan mysticism is the "device" used for emptying the mind. And sadly, the big thing in churches now is to try to make this pagan practice "Christian" by adding Christian terminology. But the addition of Christian terminology does not somehow "sanctify" this practice and make it Christian. Any time a Christian hears the word "technique" they should run for the hills. We do not need a technique for approaching God! We approach him through the shed blood of Christ, and this is what we place our faith in. We are to be people of faith, which means we walk by faith and not by sight. In practical terms, this means that we do not require tangible experiences that we can point to to convince us that we are close to God. We are close to God because we know we have approached him on his terms: through faith alone in Christ alone. Remember that Jesus said, after offering up his hands and his side for Thomas to examine, that there was a blessing for Christians who would come later who would believe without requiring some tangible, experiential "proof" of God:

“Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29)
Yes, it is fine to go to a quiet place, calm the mind, maybe even take a few deep breaths. But focus on a word or phrase until one's mind is emptied? No! Doing this technique puts a person into an altered state of consciousness, where the mind is not engaged. Once a person has used the technique to "park" the brain, he or she is still awake and somewhat aware but his or her God-given boundaries are down. So what happens to a person in this state? Mantra meditation is so very seductive because it generates a very powerful experience, an experience that is very real and feels very spiritual, and which deceives one into feeling as if they are actually encountering "God." But let us not forget our warning from Scripture:

"No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light."(2 Corinthians 11:14)
Also, the Bible NEVER tells us to circumvent the mind to go to God.....instead, it tells us:

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." (Mark 12:30, my emphasis)
And also this:

"And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words." (Matthew 6:7)
"Meaningless repetition?" If that's not a description for pagan, occultic, mind-altering, mantra meditation, I don't know what is. Friends, this is dangerous, dangerous stuff. Beware, beware, beware.

RICK WARREN IS TAUGHT MANTRA MEDITATION
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Oct 10, 2011 in AM Missives, Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism, Current Issues, Features, Rick Warren

Apprising Ministries continues to tell you the truth about an infestation of ne0-Gnostic corruption called Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism (CSM),

which is now pandemic within mainstream evangelicalism through its foolish embrace of the sinfully ecumenical neo-liberal cult of the Emergent Church aka the Emerging Church with its quasi-universalism in a new version of postmodern Progressive Christian theology under their spiritual circus “big tent” of empty Emergence Christianity.

You need to understand that this spurious CSM—the refried Roman Catholic mysticism “discovered” by Living Spiritual Teacher and Quaker mystic Richard Foster,

and now perpetrated within the mainstream of evangelicalism as supposed Spiritual Formation with an able assist from his spiritual twin SBC minister Dallas Willard,

was a core doctrine in the EC right from its hatching in hell.

For the sake of many new readers to AM, and I ask older ones to please extend grace while I bring them up to speed, it’s critical for you understand that the crown jewel of this spurious CSM of Foster-Willardism is a form of meditation in an altered state of consciousness commonly referred to by these neo-Gnostics as Contemplative/Centering Prayer (CCP).

Now, it stretches past the point of credulity to believe that Rick Warren, as well as his staff at Saddleback Church who’re recommending the works of Foster and Willard, are not familiar with the meditation of CCP that both of them practice and promote. For example, watch below as Dr. Daniel Amen literally teaches a mantra form of CCP to Warren himself.

The Case of Rick Warren's Vanishing Centering Prayer
The Case of Rick Warren's Vanishing Centering Prayer - Letter of Marque

Over the past six years I have played what could only be described as a virtual game of cat and mouse with the people who run the websites associated with Rick Warren, Saddleback.com and Pastors.com.

During these years, the most doctrinally farcical and Biblically absurd articles and videos have been posted at Warren’s sites,

and when they’ve come under the scrutinizing eyes of those in the body of Christ who still hold to sound Biblical doctrine those heretical and/or heterodox resources

have, wooosh, vanished with no explanation.

This has become such a frequent occurrence with the folks associated with Rick Warren’s ministry websites,

that one wonders if the people running those sites have ever been taught the Christian faith and know the difference between sound doctrine and false doctrine.

The latest example of a flat out heretical article being posted at one of Warren’s sites, only to have it mysteriously vanish, was an article posted on October 2nd, 2011 for Pastors.com / Rick Warren’s Ministry Tool Box.

The article was entitled, Centering Prayer Trusts Jesus Brings Transformation.

Below, I’m posting the screen shot that I took of both the article and the tweet sent out by Rick Warren’s Ministry Tool Box so that these are available for the public to see.

And I have issued a challenge to Rick Warren to post an explanation as to why this article mysteriously disappeared from the Pastors.com website.

If the reason why this article was pulled was because he thinks this is an unbiblical practice, then we need to hear that from Rick Warren himself.

I’ve also reproduced in this post, my radio program from October 10th, 2011 where I play a 2008 interview with Thomas Keating, one of the three Cistercian Monks responsible for creating Centering Prayer.

In that interview Keating explains how the goal of Centering Prayer is to discover that YOU ARE GOD. Knowing this, my question is, “Why on Earth would an article about Centering Prayer have ever been posted at Rick Warren’s site?”

Warren claims he is a Calvinist and a admirer of Jonathan Edwards.

That being the case, how is it possible for an article that teaches a mystical practice

developed by Roman Catholic monks that has as its goal that a person would achieve the understanding that they are god ever be approved for publication on a website that is read by hundreds of thousands of pastors around the world?

I hope that we get an explanation from Rick Warren. But, I wouldn’t bet on it.

Here's the Oct. 10th, 2011 Episode of Fighting for the Faith, Discussing the
Origins and Purpose of Centering Prayer

Here is the article in question that vanished from Pastors.com late last week
