The U.S. had not shot down a Syrian regime aircraft before Sunday's confrontation, said Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman. While the U.S. has said since it began recruiting, training and advising what it calls moderate Syrian opposition forces to fight IS that it would protect them from potential Syrian government retribution, this was the first time it resorted to engaging in air-to-air combat to make good on that promise.

Ever struggle to light a match against the side of the matchbox? Here is the analogy of the Middle East that comes to my mind. Seems to me the Middle East is like a drought-afflicted forest, with crispy dry deadwood and parched trees just waiting to go up in flames. Each of these types of incidents is like a camper attempting to strike a match. One of these days, the match is going to actually spark and ignite. When it does, a raging fire will ensue throughout the region. Not sure if we will be here to see it.

It's no fun if it's really obvious.
And I had to disguise the cliche for other reasons.
