Major Hurricane to hit Gulf Coast

Me no understand, can you elaborate, -40c same as -40f.

Celsius and Fahrenheit are two different scales for measuring and reporting temperature.

Freezing point of water is 0C or 32F
Celsius degrees are larger than Fahrenheit degrees
The two temperature scales cross at -40. The temperature is virtually the same at -40C and -40F
-87C is about the same as -125F
Boiling point of water is 100C or 212F
The size of the Celsius degree was determined by having 100 degrees of difference between the temperatures of water freezing and water boiling

FWIW, Kelvin degrees are the same as Celsius degrees. 0K (absolute zero) is about the same as -273C and -459F
Absolute zero is the temperature at which there is theoretically no motion at the atomic level, but lower temperatures than 0K exist, so the definition of absolute zero may be revised
https://www.physicscentral.com/explore/action/negative-temperature.cfm

The Rankine Scale is like the Kelvin Scale, being based on 0R as absolute zero, but the degree size is the same as Fahrenheit degrees.
0R, 0K, -273C, and -459F all absolute zero
671R, 373K, 100C, and 212F all boiling point of water
491R, 273K, 100C, and 32F all freezing point of water

Don't get me started on barometric pressure scales :wink

-40C and -40F are virtually the same. This is our high temp without the wind chill or "feels like" some days during a "real winter" On those days, nights weren't that much colder (-45F to close to -50F) because no clouds, so the earth's heat already dissipated. -35F more common, and chance of precipitation
-63F without the wind chill coldest I've been in. -125 or so with the (old scale) wind chill

Add another layer and waddle to school :lol (no buses, and school starts on time, except in rural areas, where there might be a 2 hour delay if shoveling or plowing needed to open the roads or access the doors if it snowed a bunch (feet) or drifting due to high winds (blizzard)

@Tall Timbers probably :lolsign and moon bathes in this kind of weather :biggrin
Our winters are moderated by the bodies of water around us. Haven't ever seen a blizzard here. We actually get very little if any drifting (no wind to speak of except in spring or fall). We have lots and lots of pine forest hereabouts--they serve as good wind breaks in the depths of winter (but we could use a bit of breeziness in the summer). We still have enough deciduous trees (particularly sugar maple) to provide colour in the fall against the pines--but I get annoyed if we get a fall wind that knocks the colour off the maples. One of my favourite times here is at the first heavy snow before the lakes are frozen. The heavy snow cover on the pines contrasts with the silvery lakes--makes for lavender skies. I used to think the lavender skies in Currier and Ives prints was fake until we moved up here.
Real estate prices here are getting to be like those in NY and Cali :furious :rant :mad :wild Rent is also getting more ridiculous, with more restrictions and "screening"

Afghans already being settled here, so more pressure on already-scarce housing and prices :frust :cry
Why is Minnesota a Dem target I wonder?

Why is Minnesota a Dem target I wonder?

Minnesota has always been extremely liberal. Only state (plus DC) that voted for Mondale in the Reagan landslide. Only state plus MA and DC in the another election. Deep, deep blue state. American version of Pravda published here. Communist Party Presidential candidate always on the ballot and always gets a measurable percentage of the vote. Multiple pro-marijuana political parties here and have been since 1970s and earlier. Very, very politically active. Third party and independent candidates are electable, including at the state level (notably, former Governor Jessie Ventura, and also others in the 20th Century). An independent or third-party candidate/winner would be harder for TPTB to control, so a lot of outside campaign $$$$$$

People in Minnesota aren't playing ball with "the agenda" So TPTB keep trying, beyond the point of being totally blatant and obvious (and still ineffective) :lol

According to Obama, "not enough people of color" here (or in the Dakotas, Montana, and Idaho). Guess he forgot about all the Native Americans/First Nation peoples :tappingfoot

The way races are defined is part of why Minnesota looks "more White" on paper than it is.
Tribal membership/eligibility for certain benefits limited to those with at least 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, or 1/32 traceable/verifiable Native American/First Nation/specific Tribe blood depending on the Tribe or program/benefit. Guess he also forgot about the large number of Reservations here, which are technically not USA. American Indian Movement (AIM) HQ here.
African American historically defined as "just one drop"
Asians not counted as "people of color" when it suits TPTB.

Minnesota has actually done a decent job with most immigrant populations, when compared with other places. Most of this is due to very high church involvement in communities and historic/traditional/continuing Lutheran social liberalism. Minnesota very accepting/welcoming of different races, ethnicities, etc., so easier for immigrants to assimilate and thrive, and not the historic, systemic racism found elsewhere. A lot of immigrants convert to Christianity here and there are a lot of foreign Christian missionaries here. This doesn't make TPTB happy and it may be that they're trying to overwhelm/quash Christian evangelism. We're not gonna quit praying or witnessing or relying on God to provide. Very high Christian percentage of the population, although overall very liberal. Kool to see African and Asian Christian congregations springing up (and growing fast, not in mega church way) that helps immigrants both spiritually and to assimilate and thrive. Ha ha, take that PTB :tongue

TPTB want to break the neighborhood and community bonds that form when neighbors cooperate to make it through winter. Year after year. Shoveling snow, especially when the consequences of not shoveling are very problematic, builds a work ethic and pragmatism. TPTB surely can't allow that.

Huge LGBTQABCXYZ population.

Medical and agricultural industries, several universities, money, very large middle class, and widespread opportunities for upward mobility so long as not trapped by Section 8 and/or Medicaid programs. Taxes are already higher here than most other places (for the average person) and state tries to keep a surplus on-hand for emergencies, so TPTB want to make them spend it and then some to bankrupt the state like other states are going bankrupt. Social benefits are mostly all-or-nothing instead of sliding scale, so easy to get trapped in poverty if take Section 8 or Medicaid. TPTB are working very hard to destroy the middle class here. Major tactic is ripping out affordable houses/neighborhoods and replacing with boxes (mostly rental apartments). Prevents people from building equity or saving for the future because rent provides no return for the renter and only enriches the owners and government :cry Rent always goes up, so elderly and disabled eventually lose housing and have to move or forced onto Section 8 and Medicaid, which traps them in poverty until death. This is what TPTB want because power and control. Much harder to control people that have fixed costs, especially if a fully paid off house. Much harder to control people in individual houses with multiple exits than a bunch of people with only two or three or four exits.

Strategically, headwaters and upper limits of navigability of the Mississippi River. Westernmost Great Lakes port.

Etc., etc., etc.

[ducks rocks, scissors, and paper airplanes]

Back to the hurricane :tappingfoot
