Major Hurricane to hit Gulf Coast

Can you believe my brother just moved into his new home on Gulf Shores last week?? It's this little, tiny strip of land. They vacation there every year so I guess he knows what he is doing. My grandkids (the grown ones) are at OBX in NC. They know my heart drops when they go during shark week and I beg them not to get in the water. They look like top water bait. I'm gonna just sit up here on my mtn and rock and drink coffee, sing praises to my Lord.

Praying for Susan and Caligal and all our members caught in the path of this storm. @Andy C I remember you served in the terrible days after Katrina hit. Praying for you all. My heart goes out to you all down there. Praying!!!! God have mercy on the people.
I read a article that was published in National Geographic about the Disappearing Coastline of Louisiana. I actually found and read the article a few weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. I felt like I was reading a After Action Report. It was detailed in what order the levees would fail in New Orleans in the event a Cat 3-4 Hurricane hitting Lake Ponchatrain, especially if this happened at a high tide.

It specified how high the storm surge would be and the Wards that would flood and in what order they would flood. I’m like wow this is a really intense After Action Report. That is when I discovered this article was written a couple of years before Hurricane Katrina hit. The entire article was a What if worse case scenario, and it played out in real time exactly like they knew beforehand it would.

The data compiled in the article was from studies done by the Corp of Engineers, LSU, and FEMA. From their own studies they knew what would happen if a Hurricane the magnitude of Katrina hit.

This proved the fact that the Governor of Louisiana and the Mayor of New Orleans played politics to make President Bush look bad.

This article was on National Geographic’s website for a few weeks. It was actually published in a issue of their magazine. A few weeks after I read it I went back to find it because I was going to print a copy of it. The article had been removed.

You can probably get a copy from your library. If they don't have it, they can probably get it via inter-library loan. There may or may not be a small charge. You may even be able to remotely access a digital copy via your library, depending on which, if any, periodicals databases they have. Libraries have been migrating from hard copy to digital subscriptions, so ask if you don't see the issue you're looking for on the shelf.

Don't forget college or university library if the public library doesn't have it.

If you get a digital version of the article, check to see if there were any later "corrections" or "updates"

Since the article was based on information from COE, LSU, and FEMA, you may be able to get copies of the underlying studies/reports/articles for the National Geographic article. FEMA has massive amounts of articles, reports, and data on its website.

Now weather service is saying Ida will strike Louisiana coast as a cat 4 possibly a cat 5. Obviously this storm is nothing to play around with. We live in a small town just north of Baton Rouge - right smack in the path of this storm. Well generator and plenty of gas is ready to go. At least a/c refrigerator and freezer will be ok. No doubt Sunday night into Monday is going to be quite interesting!!
