Lapid to US: Nobody tells Israel what to do when we are fighting for our lives
Israel has rejected the US call for the IDF live fire rules to be reviewed following the death of Shireen Abu Akleh.

Israel has rejected a Biden administration call that it review its army rules regarding the use of live fire. The request followed the shooting death of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in May. “No one will dictate our live-fire instructions to us when we are fighting for our lives,” Prime Minister Yair Lapid said on Wednesday during a graduation ceremony for maritime officers. “I will not let a fighter in the IDF who defended his life under fire from terrorists be prosecuted just so that we will receive applause abroad,” Lapid stated. Israel, he said, is “committed to the freedom of the press and has the strictest live-fire regulations in the world.

Alternate Prime Minister Naftali Bennett spoke to US Ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides Wednesday in response to calls from the American government for Israel to review and possibly change its rules of engagement following the death of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh.

"The IDF is the most moral army in the world, I am not ready to lose soldiers in vain. American intervention in the rules of engagement of the IDF is a dangerous and unacceptable precedent," Bennett told Nides.

Yesterday, State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters: "We will continue to press Israel directly and closely at the senior-most levels to review its policies and practices on this to ensure that something like this doesn't happen again in the future."

Gantz to US: The IDF Chief of Staff will determine its rules of engagement
Defense Minister responds to State Department statement that US will pressure Israel to change IDF rules of engagement.

This morning, Defense Minister Benny Gantz visited the IDF’s Intelligence Division, together with the Director of the IDI Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, Head of the Research Division, Head of Intelligence Operations and additional senior officials.

Minister Gantz held a situation assessment regarding various challenges including Iran, the northern arena, and the Palestinian Authority and Gaza arenas. He also discussed lessons learned from Operation Breaking Dawn, and toured the unit’s headquarters.

The Minister expressed his appreciation for the unit’s work during the recent military operation, including their close cooperation with the ISA. He also expressed his appreciation for their ongoing operational activities in all arenas.
