The Israeli military launched multiple attacks against targets positioned in the Syrian side of the Golan Heights Friday evening in retaliation for a cross-border incident earlier in the day.
According to an IDF statement, two Israeli military helicopters attacked the positions of suspected militants posted in the area.
The military launches were initially reported by residents living in the Golan village of Migdal Shams.
The helicopter offensive appears to be in relation to an incident that occurred Thursday morning across the border when an anti-aircraft missile was reportedly fired at an Israel Air Force (IAF) aircraft from across the Syrian border.
Hebrew media reported that shrapnel landed in Israeli territory, causing damage to a civilian building and vehicle in the Druze town of Majdal Shams.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson released a statement, saying "a short while ago, explosions were heard adjacent to the security fence from the Syrian side of the border," and confirmed damage "likely caused by fragments."
"IDF attack helicopters struck military targets in southern Syria belonging to the Syrian Armed Forces. A number of targets were struck, including SAF observation posts and intelligence collection systems located in SAF bases.
"The IDF holds the Syrian regime responsible for the fire against Israel earlier today. The IDF will continue operating with determination and will respond to any violation of Israeli sovereignty."
