I John 3:8

I was persecuted because I posted I John 3:8 which says, "He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil."

I was told this verse was not relevant for today and did not apply to saved people. In other words, a Christian can sin and get by with it. I am very confused about being persecuted for quoting the Bible by other Christian people!
