WHAT mATTERS? Redeeming the Time
It doesn’t take much convincing to show people that we are indeed in perilous times of the last days. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 From societies’ acceptance of the murder of babies up to the time of birth, to rampant gang and drug wars that contribute to the murder of innocents and each other, to sexual perversion flaunted and taught to grade school children, we are bombarded daily with news that we think couldn’t get any worse, but it does. The prince of the power of the air Ephesians 2:2 is pushing to see how far he can go before God says “enough!” As obedient Christians, what are we to do about all this un-Godly activity going on all around us? We are prompted in our spirits to do something, but is that something, to fight fire with fire? No. We saw last week that our weapons are not carnal but spiritual, 2 Corinthians 10:4 but what does that mean exactly?
We find the answer in Ephesians 5:11-13 “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever makes manifest is light.” We are not to co-mingle with the works of darkness, thereby giving our silent approval. We aren’t to even speak about what might be happening by them in secret, but that doesn’t mean we are to ignore them either. It says we are to “reprove” them. How? By being light. Darkness cannot co-exist with light but when light shines, the darkness is driven away. Darkness can’t be dispelled by preaching to them how bad they, or their deeds are. They need to hear about the “…goodness of God which will lead them to repentance.” Romans 2:4 In order for a person to stop sinning, he must be born again. And to be born again, he must hear the light of the Word of God, that “…God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” 2 Corinthians 5:19 This reconciliation was accomplished by the death of Jesus on the cross for the payment for their sin and sins. We are responsible to bring them the good news of the light of Christ. “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” 2 Corinthians 4:6-7
What matters is that we be “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:16 For us to redeem the time, we must look for and take every opportunity to tell people about the great love that God has for the world through the Gospel. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
