Futbol World Cup

I caught bits and pieces of the game last night as me and my friends were having dinner onboard a cruise. It's sad what happened to England and Portugal. Now I'm rooting for Argentina all the way to the finals. In fact I'm okay with any of the other three teams to win the Cup except Morocco - because of what they stand for.

Happy to see Argentina in the finals and I'm glad they are made to work for it. Their match with Netherlands is one for the books. Emotions were high, yellow cards handed out left and right, lots of drama. lol

Last night they showed they deserve to be there. Hope France wins tonight.

France and Argentina will be a good final, hopefully Argentina can play smart and not be too emotional for Messi's final game

How can the most important game in the entire sport be decided by penalty kicks? Imagine the NHL deciding the Stanley cup with a shoot out. In my humble opinion it’s an issue that traditional American sports fans have a problem with and a reason soccer has not yet been embraced in America. That of course will change over time with the open borders. Good game but it should not end in penalty kicks.

I think penalty kicks is a good way to have a winner in a game that's still tied after extra time. It's not as easy as it looks either. The stress on the kicker is enormous and the Keeper has to guess and react before the ball starts moving, otherwise it's too late to react.
Agree it's also bad enough that they have to play for 120mins , the pen shootout is exciting and even the greatest of players sometimes let the moment get the better of them.

My son was the designated penalty shot guy for most of his teams. He kept a cool head. He missed a couple of times over his career but made just about every shot as he took a lot of them. I think he had enough confidence in himself that he didn't over stress. For a while he was trying to put it right into an upper corner right next to the post and when he missed one I suggest he try for about knee level and a foot away from the post, that would give him a foot of space for any slight errors. I don't think he missed a penalty kick after that. He would always play the 10 or 8 position.

I watched a lot of hotshot kids on his teams miss wildly. You know, the ones who thought they were God's gift to soccer... man they stressed soooo much. I watched coaches use those same starting players over and over for tie breaking penaly kicks... some people never learn.

Penalty kicks are very difficult and require skill and technique to score.

The other alternative would be to keep playing another few minutes of extra time. This is physically impossible. Players are literally too tired.

Personally I don’t think penalties are the reason the sport has not been embraced in the United States.

It's odd how soccer hasn't really taken off as you say , especially since there's a large Latino culture in America .

Down here soccer isn't too big because they prefer rougher sports and are put off by the diving antics in soccer

I think once a sport is established in a certain country its very difficult for another sport to take over the current dominant ones.
