Sounds like a good light weight setup. I've tried dozens of different Linux variants over the years, bu always come back to stock Debian. Stable. Reliable. No-frills.
Started on Slackware, back in 1993. pcbash

I’ve tried various distros but always come back to some Ubuntu variant. I think it’s cool you’re rolling your own. I wouldn’t know how to do that and wouldn’t have the time but I admire what you’re doing!

I have an old XP machine that I have not upgraded because of a drafting program that I am used to and like. So if I use Linux as the operating system will I get to keep my drafting program and other old software?

Probably. There's a API translator that works in almost all current Linux distros called W.I.N.E. or just WINE. It's not an emulator but a true a true translator and has worked for everything I've thrown at it. Programs like PSP 6 and PhotoShop 7, Seagate's old disc wizard and many many more. In fact I think I'm still at 100% with everything I've tried.

You can always create a live drive on a usb drive and give it a whirl without losing what you currently have. You just install the drafting program on that drive and run it as a sort of test-drive.

Tha Old XP machine maybe only 32Bit - you will have to check that - Expirion is for 64Bit machines - If it is only 32Bit you will have to look at another Linux Distro like Debian or Emmabuntus that still support 32Bit machines - Minimun requirements for Expirion is 64Bit processor and 2GBs of RAM - also what is the name of the Drafting program or CAD there are several free ones for Linux - Here are a few
1) FreeCAD - https://www.freecadweb.org/
2) LibreCAD - https://librecad.org/
3) OpenSCAD - https://openscad.org/
4) BRL-CAD - https://brlcad.org/

My machine is a 32 bit machine. I looked and looked and finally found LibreCad. There is a lot of stuff for my 80 year old brain to absorb.
I have also noticed that the internet is really getting slow. Is that because my machine has to convert to 32 bit?

Not really - more likely just a slow processor - also you should clean out your Internet Cache once in a while, if too much junk gets in there that can cause slow speed as well while surfing - on Windows I recommend CCleaner on Linux I use BleachBit
