Christ in the Old Testament

I had a random thought about Christ appearances in the old testament, especially when he appears before Joshua.

Did Christ actually participate in the spiritual battles when Israel was fighting in wars ?

I guess the most specific example i can think of was the battle of Jericho :

"
The Commander of the LORD’s Army

13Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”

14“Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.”

Then Joshua fell facedown in reverencef and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”

15The Commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.”

And Joshua did so."

Or am i over reading into this and Jesus just appeared to assure Joshua that he was there to oversee Israel's protection ?

I've learned that whenever there is an appearance of the/an Angel of the Lord, most people are si awestruck that they will fall down and worship. When it is not Jesus, the angel tells the person not to worship him. If the Angel of the Lord accepts, the worship, it is Him since Only God is to receive our worship.

So it seems to me you aren't reading too much into this event with Joshua!

I have Ron Rhode's book, Christ Before the Manger-- about all the OT appearances of Jesus... so I checked what he wrote about Joshua's interaction and the very verses you cite, he also thinks are Jesus-- that He is the Commander!

How amazing that Jesus was involved even in the battles!

Your question is thought provoking. I believe Jesus participated because in he says, 6:2But the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have handed Jericho over to you, with its king and the valiant warriors." However His participation is not as mankind but Captain of the Lord’s army. Now my question is, "who is the Lord’s army?". I believe His Army to be heavenly hosts who waited for the trumpet sound to throw down the wall.
