Chicago would become the first major U.S. city to implement a municipally owned grocery store to address food inequity if the proposal advances, the mayor’s office said in a release. Johnson’s office said Wednesday that it’s working with the Economic Security Project, a non-profit group, on a feasibility study that "will help inform the Johnson administration’s emerging food retail strategy, which will receive input from experts, community leaders, and Chicago’s Food Equity Council."

"All Chicagoans deserve to live near convenient, affordable, healthy grocery options. We know access to grocery stores is already a challenge for many residents, especially on the South and West sides," Johnson said. "My administration is committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities. I am proud to work alongside partners to take this step in envisioning what a municipally owned grocery store in Chicago could look like."

Yes, Chicago does a great job taking care of the city. Crime is no problem, shootings are a rare occurrence, and there is no poverty. Im confident they will run this store as well as the rest of the city….:sarcasm

What exactly does this mean in layman's terms?

Lots of stores in that area are closing due to soaring crime and large-scale theft. Instead of addressing the issue of crime the mayor has put forward the idea of a city-owned and city-funded grocery store. Apart from gross misappropriation of taxpayer money, it opens the doors, in my opinion anyway, to furthering a system in which government has more control over who gets what, if anything, and at what cost.

I 100% agree.
Instead of addressing the problems that lead to this point, they are creating yet another potentially (most likely) bigger problem(s).
Looney leftist liberals DO NOT POSSESS a CLUE in regards to how to manage ANYTHING whatsoever.
They create problems , and then create even more problems to solve the problems they created.
Sheer madness at its finest.

If the government is going to run a business - like Amtrak - it will most likely be broke and in-debt soon enough - funny about Amtrak it is The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, commonly known as Amtrak, was established in October of 1970 when Congress consolidated the 20 independent railroads in the United States into one. The US Government created a monopoly - that is good - Bell Telephone tried with the telecom service - oh that's bad break them up

The national highway system killed most rail travel. Most of Amtrak is not independent railroads, but the passenger rail service that was being abandoned by major rail carriers who could not tolerate the profit loss. Even tourist lines struggle to serve the niche passenger market as many railfans age out.

A few passenger carriers have excelled such as Long Island RR who serves millions of people in the Boston to DC metroplex.

Some states formed their own service like MARC and SEPTA and as regional carriers may just break even.

Although loosing money, Amtrak is a national asset, and when 9/11 grounded aircraft, more than proved its strategic worth.

Transportation needs will continue to fluctuate, be it gas prices, electric vehicle development, or just choked crumbling roads.
Amtrak has had good years and bad ones, and like our nation, is really dependent on quality leadership.

"Anything but honest (non Crony) capitalism is best."

Govt subsidized food distribution hubs to replace the mom and pop/large corps that are tired out from incessant theft and being looted/burned down every time a LEO puts down a criminal with a favored skin tone.

Because the legions of criminals certainly won't loot and pillage THESE places like they did when it was "the man" who ran the joints. /S.

These lib voters in Dim cities have no ability to perceive that their voting and their personal actions are the biggest threat to their own ability to live anything remotely resembling a civilized life.

As President Reagan pointed out, "the nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'" We all know that government-run anything will be an absolute disaster, especially when it's the demonrats who are solely in charge of places like Chicago.

I forgot to add, the airlines gave the coup-d'grace as long distance railtravel ended. Even the Canadian Trans-continental is broken into regional runs these days.
