As expected, the Emergency Act passed as the NDP voted with them. They really were in a tough place. With Singh being a lapdog for Trudeau they lost a huge chunk of their base and party financial backing. If they had voted with the will of their voters they would have forced a no-confidence vote (what Trudeau's threat was at his press conference earlier today) and they would have lost a lot. They couldn't afford an election right now and would maybe lose their party status. But, going along with the Liberals they are going to lose the bulk of their remaining supporters. But this way they figure they can at least keep their individual seats, salaries and pensions. I don't agree at all with the NDP party and I do think their philosophy was always leading to this spot but one of their former leaders, Jack Layton, was a proud Canadian and stood by the Charter. There is a reason he brought them to Royal Opposition status for the first and only time.
I am mourning my country. The Conservatives have vowed to fight back. The moment the motion passed, the interim Conservative Leader, Bergen, brought up one of the Emergency Act's motions says that if enough MPs sign a petition they can recall it. But she was instantly interrupted by one of the Liberals who said they agreed to end the session the moment the vote passed and even the Speaker wouldn't let her finish. And now they're giving themselves a week-long vacation. What can be done in that mean time?
