A Badge of Disgrace: The Fall of the Boy Scouts

February 18, 2020

By Tony Perkins (FRC)

It's one of the saddest, most predictable "I-told-you-so" moments of our generation. The Boy Scouts, where future moon walkers and presidents learned the virtues and value of leadership, has finally collapsed. Turns out, the decade of compromise hasn't been kind to the Scouts, who turned in their moral compass seven years ago to chase the approval of critics it could never win. Now, deep into the BSA's self-imposed identity crisis, the group is filing for bankruptcy -- an unhappy ending we all warned was coming.

For those who knew the Scouts through their proud and honorable days, the demise has been slow and painful. But this is what comes of throwing up your hands on a century of conviction: irrelevance and, ultimately, insolvency. For 103 of its 110 years, the Boy Scouts were a pillar of principle -- not that it was easy. As most of us know, the fight to live out your beliefs in this world can be an exhausting one. The Scouts spent years in court just for the freedom to stick to their moral code. They won -- but to the organization's dismay -- the battle didn't end. Waves of LGBT activists kept coming. The pressure built and built until finally, in 2013, under the leadership of Rex Tillerson, headquarters gave into the lie that compromise would be their salvation. Seven years later, the irony is: there's nothing left to save.

More than a half-decade into this radical experiment, the group that counted Martin Luther King, Jr., George W. Bush, and Buzz Aldrin as members is barely recognizable. A handful of local councils have managed to squeak by on solid reputations, but after the organization opened its arms to kids and leaders who identify as gay or transgender, membership became anemic. Then in a failed effort to fill the ranks they began recruiting girls, which not only angered its base -- but pitted the organization in a legal war with Girl Scouts USA. Now, a program that used to be America's finest, is knee-deep in Chapter 11.

If you're wondering where raising a white flag on core values leads, this is it. The Scouts are a case study in moral compromise -- the story of anyone who exchanges the truth for cowardly conformism. Leaders at the BSA dropped their moral mandate to accommodate what they don't believe. In the current climate, that's called "inclusion." To everyone else, it's considered betrayal.

Right now, too many churches, Christian colleges, even businesses are dangerously close to making the same mistake. They're so desperate or fearful -- or both -- that they're willing to water down who they are to protect the small space they're standing on. There's just one problem: the gospel's truth isn't up for negotiation. And in their rush to soften the blow of its confrontation, some believers are selling out their identity as followers of Jesus.

Christians in Paul's time were no different. Like humans throughout history, they craved acceptance. "I am astonished," he wrote to the Galatians, "that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel -- which is really no gospel at all. Evidently, some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ... Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings or of God? ...If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

The Boy Scouts wandered so far away from who they are that by the end of 2016, they even dropped their most defining characteristic: boys. In the end, it ruined them. That's the destiny of any Christian who takes the naïve view that world can be placated. It can't. True love, I Corinthians 13:6 tells us, is truth. It's being salt and light in a draining, hostile, unforgiving culture. "Come out from them and be separate," Paul urged, because he understands that in the end, it's not our sameness with the world that transforms people. It's our distinction of standing on truth in their midst. That may not be easy -- but, as the Boy Scouts are finding out, it's a whole lot better than the alternative.

It is too bad that children don't have an organization that isn't going along with the lgbt movements agenda. This world wants to twist the normal into abnormal :puke to brainwash our children and grandchildren. This world calls evil good, and good evil. :goodbad

In the ministry that my wife and I are involved in we have found that the slow demise of the BSA has had one seemingly beneficial side effect, groups like Royal Rangers, Trail Life and The Young Marines are having bit of a resurgence or up-tick in membership. ***Note*** This is just our experience and could be anecdotal to that alone ***

Our exposure to these three groups has been entirely positive, two being faith based and the third being open and receptive to the clear, Biblical presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our only direct exposure to the BSA is through a single troop, led by two Christ following men. They make sure faith is a large part of what they do. I thought I should add that encouraging tidbit. It's nice to know that there's almost always a light bearing remnant of the faithful even in some of the darkest places.

When PC, government, and your everyday leftist get their grimy paws into institutions they destroy them. Scouts have undergone lawsuits as well, and they were slowly losing their quality of character. It's a sad state of affairs. I don't know about the girl scouts but I still support them by buying their cookies.

Love vs. Hate all the way.
Love the cookies, hate the result in my physical ummmm...condition resulting from consumption of them. You do know that every box of those delectable temptations is a single serving, right?
:heh I thought I was the only one who had read serving size that way! I justify buying them because I remember selling them and was always grateful for people that bought them...of course, it was only 50 cents/ box then.

I think you might be onto something there. People get tired of being bashed over the head by the shock troops of the LGBTQP culture warriors, and they don't want to fight losing legal battles in courts that rule in favour of the LGBTQP so they vote with their feet. They walk out the door, with their kids and find an alternative.

I think public libraries and schools might want to rethink their current practices of helping pedophiles groom children into LGBTQP lifestyles because thinking parents who don't want to get sued, just quietly head for the doors, and find the alternatives.

I know back when we were homeschooling our teens, it kind of became VERY obvious that every time the schools introduced a newer more evil sex programming agenda, we saw a sudden surge of families deciding to homeschool and they weren't all Christians either. Even the self professed pagans who tended to vote on the left (not always) didn't care for the programming of children that was going on. I know in that city, the Christian schools always had waiting lists, and people were simply leaving one couple at a time, with their children.

I never knew anyone in the Scouts program. I went to a Christian school so we all went to the clubs at our respective churches.

LGBT grooming really is sexual grooming for kids. Their whole identity is wrapped up in it so how can it not? No wonder even non-Christians are growing weary of it. I still think kids shouldn’t be taught sex Ed until around the time puberty starts, 10 or 11.

Ha. I love them but I don't eat them anymore. I just buy them to support the girl scouts and give the whole box to someone else. :) My favorite is the Samoans. :madgrin

I can give you my address, assuming you find the need to unburden yourself. See, that way I will be doing my part by inspiring you to dig deeper, pad the GSA accounts as well was my girth. Not everyone is a goer, some have to be senders! <--- Out of context maybe?

I'm just going to put it out there ~ homosexuals destroyed the Boy Scouts organization on two fronts. First, it was homosexuals who abused these boys who later sued the BSA. Second, it was the homosexuals (and their LMNOP co-horts) who sued the BSA to allow them into the organization, thus forcing Christians to rightly no longer allow their sons to participate in the group. And this may have been what the LMNOP perverts wanted all along, to destroy yet another organization that a lot of Christians participated in. :furious

I am an Eagle Scout. It is traditional to say "am" instead of "was" to stress the permanence of the honor. Many returned their Eagle medals when homosexuals were allowed to become adult Scout leaders. I still have mine put up somewhere.
The twelve items in the Scout Law begin with "Trustworthy". The guidance was intended for the boys. Who now guides the adult leaders?
It has long been apparent that tradition can no longer be regarded as a permanent value, regardless of the institution. On this site we know the church is the most significant institution, and the one whose deterioration impacts all others.
I am ashamed, and I am proud. I am an Eagle Scout.
Today I soar with wings of eagles as in Isaiah 40:31. And I await the One who will arise with healing in his wings as in Malachi 4:2.
