The Pentagon announced Monday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has put 8,500 American troops on “heightened alert” in case they need to deploy as part of a NATO readiness force amid a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said at a briefing on Monday:
At the direction of the president and following recommendations by Secretary [of Defense Lloyd] Austin, the United States has taken steps to heighten the readiness of its forces at home and abroad so they are prepared to respond to a range of contingencies, including response to the NATO Response Force (NRF), if it is activated.

Secretary Austin has placed a range of units in the United States on a heightened preparedness to deploy, which increases our readiness to provide forces if NATO should active the NRF or if other situations develop. All told, the number of forces that then secretary has placed on heightened alert comes up to about 8,500 personnel.

Each military service always have some units ready for deployment. All this notification does it cause these units to finish any last minute preparation for possible deployment. Even if they do get the order to deploy, its highly doubtful they will deploy in Ukraine, but more likely a nearby nato country.

What will be interesting to watch is what type of units get deployed, if the order happens. All ground combat, support personnel, air assets….etc..?

Definetly interesting times, though Im not convinced its an end times scenario, but could possibly lead to such a scenario.

Just have to keep in mind who the commander in chief is. Each branch of the military follow his orders when it comes to war. If I remember clearly only Congress can approve the president's order to deploy for war. Let's see how it plays out.

Technically the Constitution gives Congress the right to DECLARE war. The last war they declared was WWII.
The “decider” for every war since has been the President. In these most perilous of times, we have a President with the worst discernment in American history.

I doubt it would pass in Congress if the two moderate Democrats in the Senate don't support it. Declaring war would be disasterous not only for the US but as we've noticed Russia has a foothold in various places right now and I think there's a reason why Putin has been having military exercises with China and Iran over the past months because there must be more in his mind than just annexing Ukraine which Putin has personal purposes for doing being his long desire to reinstate the USSR and he already has someone in mind for regime change. Aside from Ukraine, I do believe Putin only has one thing on his agenda, to be the dominant world power having control of energy resources for Europe and out of greed it will include his "scheme to take plunder" from Israel. It's all leading in that direction especially with Russia planning military exercises with the Syrian military near the Golan Heights in February. Possibly starting Isaiah 17/Psalm83 or Ezekiel 38.

A handful of U.S.-based units have been notified to prepare themselves for possible deployment in response to a Russian incursion into Ukraine
The units, have not been given any orders to deploy, but to shorten their recall timelines in case NATO activates its response force. NATO Response Force (NRF) NATO Allies do have the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) which consist of about 5000 troops, plus support - If NATO does not activate it's response force then there will be no deployment - but the Ukraine is not yet a full member of NATO.
The Ukraine still not been issued with a Membership Action Plan (MAP). The MAP is a program of support designed to the needs of a particular country wishing to join NATO.Countries taking part in the submission of the MAP must hand in individual annual national programs on how they are preparing for future membership – covering political, economic, defense, resource, security and legal aspects.
