Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi is expected to visit Cairo on Sunday as Egypt is in the midst of a massive push to arrange a permanent Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. It’s the first time since Tzipi Livni was foreign minister that such a high-level public Israeli visit has taken place in Cairo. Ashkenazi was invited by his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry to discuss bilateral ties between Egypt and Israel.

But the visit takes place as Egypt, which has historically been an interlocutor between Israel and Hamas, is advancing a formal ceasefire in the aftermath of the 11-day Gaza war that ended on May 21. The two men will discuss the details of that initiative. Israel is expected to tell the Egyptians that any agreement should include the return of the bodies of two soldiers believed killed in the 2014 Gaza war – Lt. Hadar Goldin and St. Sgt. Oron Shaul – as well as the release of two civilians believed to be held by Hamas – Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed.
