In Minneapolis, armed patrol group tries to keep the peace

"BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) — As protests intensified in the Minneapolis suburb where a police officer fatally shot Daunte Wright, a group of Black men joined the crowd intent on keeping the peace and preventing protests from escalating into violence.

Hundreds of people have gathered outside the heavily guarded Brooklyn Center police station every night since Sunday, when former Officer Kim Potter, who is white, shot the 20-year-old Black motorist during a traffic stop. Despite the mayor’s calls for law enforcement and protesters to scale back their tactics, the nights have often ended in objects hurled, tear gas and arrests.

The Black men at the edge of the crowd wear yellow patches on protective vests that identify them as members of the Minnesota Freedom Fighters, a group formed to provide security in Minneapolis’ north side neighborhoods during unrest following the death of George Floyd last year. They are not shy about casting a forceful image — the group’s Facebook page features members posing with assault-style weapons and describes itself as an “elite security unit” — but on Friday the Freedom Fighters didn’t appear to be armed and said they intended only to encourage peaceful protesting.

As several people began to rattle a fence protecting the Brooklyn Center police department, the Freedom Fighters communicated to each other over walkie-talkies. They declined to say how many are in their group.

On recent nights, the Freedom Fighters have moved through the crowd in formation, wearing body armor and dark clothing, weaving past umbrella-wielding demonstrators to create separation along a double-layer perimeter security fence. Their passive tactics are intended to deescalate the tension, preventing agitators from pressing forward and provoking the law enforcement officers standing at attention with pepper-ball and less-lethal sponge grenade launchers at the ready.

“We can keep it peaceful,” said Tyrone Hartwell, a 36-year-old former U.S. Marine who belongs to the group. “There’s always somebody in the group that wants to incite something,” adding that throwing objects at the police takes the focus away from their calls for justice and seeps energy from the movement."

This is very encouraging to see. I know that not every single person at these demonstrations has ill intent but far too many of them do and use the well meaning, good intentioned people as cover and scapegoats to create mayhem.

If we saw more demonstrators like the Freedom Fighters and concerned people who really want justice forcefully policing their own it could go a long way to generating some compassion for their actual cause. They ought to film the people who are causing trouble, tackle them, rough them up good (black eyes, broke nose) and then hand them over to the cops to be further dealt with.

This would be more effective than a team of riot cops with gas and dogs and go a long, long ways towards making their narrative that “it‘s just a few bad apples, most of the protesters are peaceful” look legitimate.

My sympathy for the scumbags who use these events to act out and hurt people is over and it‘s made me deaf to the phrase “Black Lives Matter” I know it‘s BLM the socialist organization that’s bad but when I even hear that specific phrase now I literally see red & feel my fight or flight response kick in.

Post-Ferguson and post-George Floyd demonstrators very different overall, and the differences reflect the cultural, social, and faith involvement differences between Twin Cities Metro and St. Louis Metro. Community response in Brooklyn Center is much like that in Minneapolis, but building on what was/is learned there. There was/is so much being poured into communities after George Floyd that some organizations and churches didn't get as much of a chance to help as they tried to provide, and others still have growing abundance, and they've stepped up and sharing here now. God's resources are infinite, and He blesses communities through the Church's obedience and activities.

‘It Was Devastating’: Thousands Line Up At Brooklyn Center Food Drive

"MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – In difficult times, you can always find “The Helpers.” They were out in full force on Saturday, connecting with the Brooklyn Center community.
Multiple food drives and donation drop-offs took place for those impacted by the boarded-up and temporarily closed down grocery stores.
One of the organized drives was put on by IBEW 292 in Brooklyn Park. It was a contactless drive-thru for those in need of a fresh meal right now. They had 1,300 free boxed-up meals of produce and milk jugs to give out. A long line of cars formed and wrapped around the IBEW 292 building Saturday morning.
Derrick Givens was one of the coordinators of this food drive-thru. He organized this as a way to put his pain into action.
“It was devastating, it was shocking to see another life lost, unnecessarily, at the hands of law enforcement,” said Givens, “I get healing each and every time I go out into this community.”
Rhonda Johnson Marn was among the volunteers packing cars with boxed meals and milk jugs.
“Being able to do something where you can actually do something physical to help people really is powerful,” said Johnson Marn, who is also an English teacher at Brooklyn Center High School and has been helping them cope all week with the death of Daunte Wright."
“A lot of students who live near the police station have been losing sleep at night, some have had to be relocated temporarily. It’s just been really hard on our kids,” said Johnson Marn.
Brooklyn Center High School has been turned into a make-shift grocery store, serving those who live in the surrounding area, especially those who live close to the Brooklyn Center Police Department.
“Over the course of this week, we’re served 8,000 families, yesterday alone we had 2,500 [people],” said Josh Fraser, the principal of Brooklyn Center Community Schools.
The high school has been operating this way since Monday, the day after Daunte Wright died, and the day the nightly protests started.
“A lot of people are scared to go out in public, everyone is nervous and on edge,” said Langston Hall, a 16-year-old who just moved to the neighborhood and felt compelled to volunteer at the high school food bank when he saw how much his neighbors were hurting.
“I think it’s so cool how many people are out here to help the community and everyone is coming together in rough times,” said Hall."

Kim Potter’s Defense Files Opposition To Cameras In Courtroom During Trial

"MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) — The defense team for Kim Potter, the ex-Brooklyn Center police officer charged with killing Daunte Wright, has filed a motion opposing cameras in the courtroom during her trial.
Potter faces one charge of second-degree manslaughter in connection to Wright’s death during a traffic stop in April. Her trial is set to begin in December."

Daunte Wright Shooting: Kim Potter’s Defense Team Requests Deadline For Amended Charges

"MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The defense team for former Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kim Potter is asking for a deadline for amending charges.
Potter faces one charge of second-degree manslaughter in connection to the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a traffic stop in April.
In a court filing Tuesday, Potter’s defense team said that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said in early June that he would decide in “two or three weeks” whether or not there would be an amendment to the complaint in Potter’s case.
“It has now been four weeks and we have not heard from Mr. Ellison,” the defense said. “Until Mr. Ellison makes up his mind the defense does not know what omnibus motions we should file.”
The defense is asking for the judge to set a cutoff date for amending the complaint."

Kim Potter’s Trial Will Not Be Livestreamed, Judge Rules

"MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The trial of Kim Potter, the former Brooklyn Center police officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright, will not be livestreamed, a judge ruled Thursday.
Minnesota law requires both parties in a trial to consent to audio and video coverage. Potter’s defense team filed a motion opposing such coverage in July.
A judge can override court rules to allow coverage, as in the case of Derek Chauvin’s trial. Judge Peter Cahill cited, in part, the pandemic, which severely limited courtroom attendance."

Several updates. Trial begins November 30th.

Daunte Wright Shooting: Media Makes Fresh Plea For Access To Kim Potter’s Trial

"MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — News organizations made a fresh plea Monday to the judge overseeing the case of a former suburban Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of Daunte Wright, asking her to allow live video coverage of the trial because of the continuing threat of COVID-19 and the strong public interest.
Judge Regina Chu ruled in August that there will be no recording or livestreaming of Kim Potter’s trial, which is due to start Nov. 30.
Chu said the public and media would have ample space to view the trial in the courtroom or in designated overflow rooms. And she noted that the defendant had objected. Chu said the “extraordinary circumstances” that led a different judge to allow live audiovisual coverage of the trial of ex-officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd no longer applied."
More
https://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2021...s-fresh-plea-for-access-to-kim-potters-trial/

I think limiting public access to the trial is a huge mistake. Livestreaming would reduce the possibility of violence in the event public opinion disagrees with the verdict or people think the trial was unfair/inadequately prosecuted, etc., and reduce the possibility of "railroading" Livestreaming is a win for everyone.

Daunte Wright Shooting: Jury Will Be Anonymous And Partially Sequestered In Kim Potter Trial

"MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The jury will be anonymous and partially sequestered in the trial of Kim Potter, the former Brooklyn Center officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright.
According to court documents filed in Hennepin County Court Tuesday, Judge Regina Chu has ruled that no identifying information can be released to the public about potential and selected jurors.
“At the conclusion of deliberations, jurors’ names and some contact information shall be made public only by the Court and on a date designated by the Court in a subsequent written order,” Chu ruled.
The judge said the court can restrict access to juror information if the jury needs protection from external threats.
Chu says the jury will be partially sequestered during the trial, but if that plan “proves ineffective” the court may order a full sequestration. The jury will be fully sequestered during deliberations."

Kim Potter Trial: Court Denies State’s Motion To Exclude Expert Witness’ Testimony On ‘Action Error’

"MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A motion from the state to exclude an expert witness’ testimony for Kim Potter’s defense has been denied by the court."
"Court documents show that the defense intends to call Miller as an expert witness to testify about “action error” and “slip and capture error” psychological phenomena. Miller’s expert report says that “action error” is when a person means to do something but automatically does something else. Miller says this can happen when an individual is under conditions of stress. Meanwhile, Miller says “slip and capture error” can include “weapons confusion.”
The state motioned to exclude the testimony by arguing that it would not be relevant or helpful to the jury."

Potential Jurors At Kim Potter’s Trial In Daunte Wright’s Death Will Go Under Microscope

"MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — When attorneys sift through potential jurors for the trial of a suburban Minneapolis police officer who says she meant to use her Taser instead of her gun when she killed Daunte Wright, they’ll take a hard look at their attitudes toward policing, protests, and the Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter movements.
Jury selection starts Tuesday in former Brooklyn Center Officer Kim Potter’s manslaughter trial. The pool has already responded to questionnaires similar to those used this year in Derek Chauvin’s murder trial for the killing of George Floyd. Roughly 200 potential jurors were asked to provide extensive information on what they already know about the Potter case and whether they have positive or negative impressions about her and Wright."

Kim Potter Trial: Mostly White Jury Seated For Trial In Daunte Wright’s Death

"MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A mostly white jury was seated Friday for the trial of a suburban Minneapolis police officer charged in Daunte Wright’s shooting death, and opening statements were scheduled to begin next week.
Kim Potter, 49, is charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter in the April 11 shooting of Wright, a 20-year-old Black motorist, following a traffic stop in the suburb of Brooklyn Center.
Potter, who is white, has said she meant to use her Taser on Wright after he tried to drive away from officers while they were trying to arrest him, but that she drew her handgun by mistake. Her body camera recorded the shooting.
The last two jurors, both alternates, were quickly seated Friday morning. Opening statements are scheduled for Wednesday.
Nine of the first 12 jurors seated — the ones who will deliberate if no alternates are needed — are white, with one juror identifying as Black and two as Asian. It’s evenly split between men and women. The two alternates are also white.
The jury roughly matches the demographics of Hennepin County, which is about 74% white. Its makeup was closely watched, as legal experts have said that juries that are diverse by race, gender and economic background are necessary to minimize bias in the legal system."

Its starting to look like a hung jury based on what the jury asked yesterday. I pray this officer will be found not guilty. Nobody disputes what she did, nor has she been accused of shooting him on purpose, so why the trial? Purely an accident and also clearly incompetence on her part being a 26 year veteran, but not criminal.
