I was reading Amos today and came across Amos 5:18 - Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness and not light (ESV). What is Amos 5 referring to? I’m confused by this. Thanks

Because at that point in the history of Israel/ Judah, their sins had not caught up to them just yet. The Lord was still withholding judgment, and folks were convinced that when "the Day of the Lord" came, they would be standing in the sun with the Lord.

What they didn't understand was that the Day of the Lord would be a crucible for Israel in the Tribulation, and a time of judgment for the rest of the planet. No one would get off easy.
