Al Jazeera files complaint against IDF at ICC over Abu Akleh killing
Previous investigations into the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh concluded that she was most likely killed by an accidental bullet from an IDF soldier.

Al Jazeera filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court against members of the IDF over the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot and killed during an IDF operation in the West Bank in May, the network announced on Tuesday. The complaint comes in the middle of the ICC’s high-profile annual meeting of its Assembly of State Parties that govern it and formulate its budget.

In March 2021, then-ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda opened a full criminal investigation against Israelis and Palestinians relating to the 2014 Gaza War, the 2018 Gaza border confrontations and against the Israeli settlement enterprise.

State Department spokesman says US is opposed to Al Jazeera taking killing of its journalist to International Criminal Court.

The United States said on Tuesday it opposed Al Jazeera taking the killing of Palestinian Arab-American reporter Shireen Abu Aqleh to the International Criminal Court. "We oppose it," State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters, as quoted by the AFP news agency. "The ICC should focus on its core mission, and that core mission is of serving as a court of last resort in punishing and deterring atrocity crimes," he added. Al Jazeera announced Tuesday morning that it will file a complaint with the ICC, accusing Israeli forces of deliberately shooting Abu Aqleh.
