AI can now steal your passwords with 95% accuracy by ‘listening’ to you type

The researchers from Cornell University released a paper on Aug. 3 describing how they used a deep learning model in conjunction with a recording of someone typing to determine what the user was typing with a startlingly high accuracy rate. The data-gathering method, known as a "sound-based side channel attack," would create a new way for hackers to record the personal information of users without them knowing.

The first step of the attack is to record keystrokes on the target's keyboard, as that data is required for training the prediction algorithm. This can be achieved via a nearby microphone or the target's phone that might have been infected by malware that has access to its microphone.

Alternatively, keystrokes can be recorded through a Zoom call where a rogue meeting participant makes correlations between messages typed by the target and their sound recording.
The researchers gathered training data by pressing 36 keys on a modern MacBook Pro 25 times each and recording the sound produced by each press.

That makes sense. The letters on a keyboard are positioned in a certain way. The human hand has the ability to move in certain ways. Given enough practice and the letters typed will become recognizable by something with good ears and a knowlege of the patterns of sounds.

There were phone phreakers back in the day, they learned to hack the dial tones to get free calls and dial up.
A bored smart person with evil intent can be a dangerous thing.
