Before I begin my devotional today, I want to wish each mother and especially those on this forum a very blessed and happy “Mother’s Day”. I trust that you will be honored in a very special way this day by your husband and children. I appreciate very much godly mothers.

In our society today the influences of politics, education, and peers pale in comparison to the influence and love of a mother. Of all the roles on planet earth, no role is more important than that of a mother. Nothing is more important to our families and our nation than that of motherhood. Abraham Lincoln said that no man is poor who has had a godly Mother! You see, "Mothers write on the hearts of their children what the rough hand of the world cannot erase." My brethren, being a mother is a very important role that the Lord chooses to give to many women.
A mother is told to love her children (Titus 2:4-5), in part so that she does not bring reproach on the Lord and on the Savior whose name she bears. Moreover, the Bible never states that every woman should be a mother. However, it does say that those whom the Lord blesses to be mothers should take the responsibility very seriously because they have a unique and crucial role in the lives of their children. Just as a mother bears a child during pregnancy, feeds and cares for a child during infancy, so mothers also play an unending role in the lives of their children, whether they are adolescents, teenagers, young adults, or even adults with children of their own. While the role of motherhood must change and develop, the love, care, nurture, and encouragement a mother gives should never cease. Psalm 127:3-5 tell us that children are a gift from the Lord and throughout God’s precious Word He commands mother’s for their:
(1) Availability – morning, noon, and night (Deuteronomy 6:6-7);
(2) Discipline – teaching the fear of the Lord, drawing the line consistently, lovingly, firmly (Ephesians 6:4; Hebrews 12:5-11; Proverbs 13:24; 19:18; 22:15; 23:13-14; 29:15-17);
(3) Involvement – interacting, discussing, thinking, and processing life together (Ephesians 6:4);
(4) Modeling with Integrity – living what you say, being a model from which a child can learn by “catching” the essence of godly living (Deuteronomy 4:9, 15, 23; Proverbs 10:9; 11:3; Psalm 37:18, 37);
(5) Nurture – providing an environment of constant verbal support, freedom to fail, acceptance, affection, unconditional love (Titus 2:4; 2 Timothy 1:7; Ephesians 4:29-32; 5:1-2; Galatians 5:22; 1 Peter 3:8-9);
(6) Teaching – the Scriptures and a biblical worldview (Psalm 78:5-6; Deuteronomy 4:10; Ephesians 6:4); and,
(7) Training – helping a child to develop skills and discover his/her strengths (Proverbs 22:6) and spiritual gifts (Romans 12:3-8 and 1 Corinthians 12)

Closing thoughts:
I knew a pastor's wife who is a devout woman of prayer. Whenever her husband left for an important meeting or visit, she prayed a sentence or two for him, asking the Lord's guidance, protection, wisdom, and strength. She usually prayed aloud and the children often heard her, but she never thought much about the impact it would have on them. The simple prayers from our infant lips were but echoes from our mother's heart. Can we ever forget the soft caresses of those hands of blessing on our heads as we knelt by our beds? Can we fail to remember her night vigils, her seasons of intercession, her well-marked Bible, and her words of admonition? Her actions spoke eloquently of Him who taught us of the greater love of God. I believe that many mothers will occupy a higher position in God's coming kingdom than many prominent Christian leaders whom we might expect to find in places of greater honor. I’m mindful of some of the great men of the Bible like Moses, Samuel, and Timothy.
Where would they have been had it not been for their praying, Spirit-led mothers? Think of Augustine, John Newton, and the zealous Wesley. Their names may never have lighted the pages of history had it not been for the faith, prayers, and the blessed influence of a godly mother. First Samuel 1 records Hannah's plea and God's answer in the birth of her son Samuel. In 2 Timothy 1:5, the apostle Paul referred to the faith of Timothy's mother, which I am sure was often expressed in earnest prayer on his behalf. My friend, next to the LOVE of Christ, nothing is as wonderful as the LOVE of a Mother.
Mother’s Day is a day set aside to celebrate the goodness of motherhood. A good mother loves her family and provides an atmosphere where each member can find acceptance, security, and understanding. A mother is there when we need a listening ear, or maybe a comforting word, a warm hug, or just a loving touch on a fevered brow. However, a mother who is a believer in Christ; her greatest joy is in teaching her children to trust and to love Jesus as their Savior. My friend and fellow brethren, our mothers deserve to be honored, not just on one special day a year, but every day. If you’re living at home or have left the family home, give daily recognition in respect and thoughtfulness and in loving deeds, but above all else, please express how much you love her and how much she truly means to you.
