A 2,000-year-old luxury Roman villa with a thermal bath and underfloor heating has been unearthed in Kempten, Bavaria, one of the oldest settlements in Germany. Beneath the town of Kempten lie the foundations of the Roman city of Cambodunum, settled by Roman Emperor Nero Claudius Drusus Germanicus In 15 BC. Cambodunum was officially founded by Emperor Augustus in the 1st century AD due to the location’s strategic value. The Roman city offered access to the Alpine passes connecting it with Bregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg in modern-day Austria and via Lake Constance and the Rhine, Cambodunum was also connected with Gaul.

Caesar had baths and villas heated with underfloor heating :smile

Hot water or steam underfloor and/or wall radiators very comfortable and indoor clean way to heat, and can be very energy efficient. Modern forced-air can be very energy wasteful, noisy, drying, and indoor spreading of pollution, dirt, pollen, mold, sickness, etc., plus filters, cleaning, and maintenance.

:hmmm Did the article make any mention of Biden being seen in the area when the villa was built? Just curious, because he recently broke ground to install a $20 million heated sidewalk for a town in NH. It seems only logical that he may have helped get heated floors for rich people installed 2,000 years ago by stealing taking money from the taxpaying peasants like he does now.

Up here we call that underfloor heating radiant heat. That's what I've got in my home, except I guess mine is in the floor and not under it.

Here, too. Seen both in-floor and underfloor. Depends on what the flooring is and how long ago it was built or rehabbed. Sometimes a combination of in-floor and underfloor, and some combination radiant and radiator heat.
