Get ready for the $10 tube of toothpaste.
Colgate-Palmolive Co CEO Noel Wallace said last week at an industry conference that the household goods maker sees its new Optic White Pro Series toothpaste as the type of premium product "vital" to its ability to raise prices, which will help drive profit growth this year.

His remarks come when many consumer products companies are hiking prices as much as they can to offset their own rising costs, a trend that could continue due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, whose economic risks include driving up gasoline prices.

So far retailers and consumers seem largely unfazed by higher prices. But some lawmakers and consumer advocates argue that companies are excessively raising prices in order to fuel profits and return money to shareholders.

"We're seeing significant price hikes on virtually every item consumers purchase," said U.S. Representative David Cicilline, who is working on proposed antitrust legislation aimed at bringing down prices. "They're imposing real hardships. People are taking things out of their grocery carts because it’s too expensive."

I've always had a difficult time adjusting to inflation. I tend to adjust my consumption habits when prices go up.

Yesterday at Costco a lady was giving samples of a tasty apple. She told me they were on sale. I looked at the price and told her I liked those apples very much but I don't buy apples unless I can get them for $1.49 a pound or less. She told me, but they're on sale! I responded that even on sale they cost more than I'm willing to pay. Here in Fairbanks most apples cost around 4-5 bucks per pound but occasionally some will come down to my buy point...

I expect I'll be in heaven before I'm willing to buy a tube of toothpaste for $10.

It may be too late to start stockpiling things that you're going to be needing on a daily basis. Over a year ago people were advised to start preparing for inflation and having to pay more for gasoline and food.

I believe that there was something here in the forums that was addressing that subject. I suggested learning how to can and starting your own garden.

So I'm sure that there's a few things up your sleeve that you still may be able to do. Keep your eye on sales, use coupons, buy in bulk and split the cost with a friend and or learn to can. You can can with a friend and split the cost for the food that you'll need to make soup, chili, stew and other dishes that are not costly. If you live near some farms you can get produce cheap which would include vegetables and fruit. Keep basic things on hand in your pantry. Go online and find out what it is that you need to have on hand and watch YouTube on how to prepare your home and finances for increase costs.
I told a friend of mine well over a year ago to start preparing for hard times. Her answer was that she lived by herself and that she really didn't need a whole lot to survive. Her pantry was not stopped with extra food. She figured she could go to the store anytime she needed food or non-food items. No matter how much I tried to talk to her she still didn't understand why she needed to prepare.

Don't turn a blind eye to what's coming down the pike. Do something, learn something, and pray to the Lord for guidance.

You may have to buy a lot of ground beef to use for various meals. You may not be able to afford chicken or fish or pork. But if you buy in bulk you can split the cost with a friend. If you live alone you may not need 12 chicken breasts. But if you split the cost with a friend each of you would get six.

So it may be too late to get some real bargains and some of the places where you can get emergency food may not have anything that's affordable. But nothing says that you can't start reading up on preparing yourself for what is to come.

By yourself a food saver so that you can break up large bags of rice, beans, coffee, flower, sugar, etc.

I think I've rambled enough and hope and pray that each of you will learn how to shop for bargains and grow your own food. Team up with one friend or two friends to split the cost of more expensive items.

Have a blessed day.

Everything seems to have gone up. We had to eliminate our weekly seafood meal, it's just too high to justify.
We use to buy steaks on mark down...every day our local grocery would have some at an affordable price and we would have a steak 1-2 times a week.

They still mark them down, but the mark down price is now usually over $10/ lb. Bye bye steak meals.

I love sea food....did you eat out or cook it yourselves?
We haven't had crab legs in ages because the price is just too high.

I've been just buying the basic necessities lately, and being extra picky when shopping. We've also stopped eating out. I've noticed that I feel better since doing that. We did stock up in February of 2020 and rotate canned goods. Thank goodness I live close to 2 Aldi's.

All this just to please the investors and line their pockets? How greedy is that? That's just wrong.

In my own personal experience, I've tried Colgate Optic White and noticed zero difference in the whiteness and brightness of my teeth after using the entire tube. I believe it promised whiter teeth in like 3 days, but that didn't happen. Afterwards, I bought a 5-pack of regular old Crest on sale at Costco to put away for backups. Glad I did now. IMO, it's despicable what this company is doing. :mad

Just an FYI. When I was little (MANY moons ago), my mom would mix baking soda, a dash of salt (for abrasive power), and a tad of my granddad’s honey to make it “paste like”. She thought doing this several times a week was better for your teeth and gums. She still had her teeth when she died at the age of 88, and I never had a cavity until I was in my 30’s.
There is some validity to the “old” way of living. :nod:nod

The more critical part of healthy teeth is not necessarily the toothpaste. First, FLOSS. Cannot emphasis this enough. Healthy gums make a health mouth. Toothpicks, floss, what ever, but get that crap out of your teeth and make sure you work the gums. Secondly, or maybe 1a, brush your teeth often. Forget the whitening crap. There is nothing healthy about whitening your teeth.

No matter water pic? That seems to get rid of a lot of little things that your toothbrush will miss. Plus what I have found is when you floss sometimes the stuff is still sitting on your teeth so water pick will wash all that stuff out. Don't forget to wash up into your gums because sometimes food lodges there too. A simple trick would be to eat a bunch of nuts or an Oreo cookie. Then go use the the waterpik. Yikes!

Good tips though on the message above. You are so right about gum health because gum health keeps your teeth in. Gingivitis is not a good thing to have. My younger sister had it and now she wears dentures.

And keep the mouth moist. Dry mouth and gums leads to big problems. Drink enough water. Rinse with water after meals and. snacks. If there's an actual problem, there are natural and manufactured solutions. FWIW, most manufactured whitening products can cause dryness.

See your dentist cuz preventive care is much, much cheaper and much less painful than remedial or curative care.
