Some of the Names of God

Some of the Names of God
By Dennis Huebshman

In a recent post, I stated the Lord God Jehovah has several descriptive names that refer to His traits, His compassion and His caring for us. Upon checking several resources, I’ve found there are well over 100 names associated with Yahweh (YHWH) Jehovah. While I cannot list them all here, I will provide some to illustrate different ones.

To start, in the 23rd. Psalm, there are 11 different names that are illustrated by David in reference terms.

Verse 1: The Lord is my Shepherd (Jehovah Rohi) I shall not want. (Jehovah Jireh – provider)
2. He maketh me to lie down in green pasture, He leadeth me beside the still waters. (Jehovah Shalom – peace).
3. He restoreth my soul (Jehovah Rapha – Healer).
He leadeth me in paths of Righteousness for His name’s sake (Jehovah Tsideknu)
4. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me. (Jehovah Shammah – present).
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me (Jehovah Ezer – My Help).
5. Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies (Jehovah Nissi – My banner of Victory).
Thou anointest my head with oil (Jehovah M’Kaddish – my holiness/sanctification).
My cup runneth over (Jehovah Manah – my portion)
6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever (Jehovah Chelea – my inheritance).

Just to give a few more:
Jehovah Shaddai – God Almighty
Jehovah Elohim – Strong Creator
Jehovah Elyon – Most High
Jehovah Adonai – My Master
Jehovah Elolam – Everlasting God
Jehovah Sabbath – Lord of Host
Jehovah Elgibbon – Mighty God.
(note: some spellings are slightly different depending on the reference, but they all have the same meaning.)

There are many many more, but this gives a pretty good picture of a Creator that is a Loving, Protective and Providing God. I know of no other religious belief that can say this about whatever deity they worship. There are a couple of religions that say they worship Jehovah and some even include the name of Jesus. The problem is, they don’t worship the Jehovah and Jesus of the True Holy Word – Bible. They have been made to “fit” man’s description of what they want the creator to be.

My comfort lies in the fact the Bible has been proven over and over again to be true, and I don’t need to seek any other source for my satisfaction Paul tells Timothy (2 Timothy 3:16) that ALL scripture is inspired by God. Also, Hebrews 6:18 tells me God cannot lie. It would be wonderful if all religions actually worshipped the same God, but that just isn’t the case.

God knew in the very beginning that people would seek other gods – some of stone; some of wood; some of metal and some of the creation such as animals and the stars. That’s why the first two commandments say we are not to have any gods other than Him, and not to make an idol of ANYTHING. The third commandment says not to use His name in vain. (Exodus 20)

While all the names provided here were used to praise, honor and worship the Lord, He does not expect you to remember them or use them when you talk to Him. The word “Father” is fine and even “Abba Father” which is very personal. He does expect you to remember and accept His Son Jesus. Not doing so is an insult to the Father and He will tell you about it at the White Throne Judgment – the one you don’t want to be at.

You can miss this Judgment by calling on Jesus to be your Savior and your Judgment will be one of rewards not punishment. He will not turn down anyone who truly seeks a relationship with Him. Romans 8:1 says we are not condemned if we are His He loves us so much that He already took our deserved punishment at the cross. To reject Him is to make that offer null and void and you will then be required to pay for all your sins for all of eternity. It’s completely your choice with no hidden meanings. No third option. Be like Joshua and let God know you and your family will serve Him (Joshua 24:15). Chose Jesus and you will have an eternal home prepared by Him just for you. (John 14)
