The Necessity of Proclaiming God’s Word in Biblical Times By Jonathan C. Brentner Why do…
God Cannot Lie
By Grant Phillips
“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” Numbers 23:19
“As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.” 2 Samuel 22:31
“And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.” Psalms 12:6
“For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.” Psalms 33:4
“Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” Proverbs 30:5
“in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,” Titus 1:2
“God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.” Hebrews 6:18
“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” (John 18:37)
My point in providing the Scriptures above is to emphasize first of all the fact that God is ALWAYS Truth and can NEVER lie. Also may we take note that the nine verses shown above are just a minute sprinkling of those contained in the Bible that clearly show that God is absolute TRUTH and cannot lie. Now with that said, we can move on to another point I want to make.
If we can just get this fact into our heads, and believe it, that GOD IS UNADULTERATED TRUTH AND CANNOT LIE, we can eliminate many of our concerns and worries. Allow me to pose a few circumstances that are often addressed.
Some folks have doubts about “Were they really saved?”
God said He would save us if we just believe in His Son and ask Him to save us. Does He lie?
Some folks have doubts that they are still saved.
God made it clear that once He saves us He won’t lose us. Nothing and no one can remove us from Him. Can He lie?
Some folks worry that if they “mess up,” God will make their life very unpleasant.
God made it clear that if we just ask, He will forgive us, and be with us throughout our lives. Can He lie?
Some folks worry about death.
God said He would be with us in sickness and health. Can He lie?
Some folks worry about what is after death.
God has made it clear what the Christian will be rewarded with, and what the non-Christian will be cursed with. Can He lie?
Some Christian folks worry that maybe they might not make it to Heaven.
Again, God has promised to save, to keep, and to bring us Home to Him. Can He lie?
Some folks worry about their health.
God has promised to be with us, and all will work out for our good if we love Him. Can He lie?
Some worry about losing their job.
Again, God has promised to be with us and provide for us. Can He lie?
Are we getting the point? We all have had worries in our lives, and we may still have some, but they can be overcome if we can just remember that God is truth and cannot lie. The next thing is to get in His Word, the Bible, and see what He is saying to us. Talk to Him in prayer. For example: If we are worried about death, get in the Bible and see what God says about it, praying the whole time for His guidance and keeping in mind He cannot lie. That is the best thing to do to alleviate our fears.
Here’s something else to keep in mind. If someone else says something that is different than what God says, then guess who is wrong? They are! And that includes me! Search the Scriptures for yourself. Don’t take other people’s word for what the Bible says. Read it yourself, and allow God to speak for Himself.
I’ve told this before, but since it’s been awhile, I’ll repeat it. I had an Old Testament class in college, at a Christian school no less, where our professor said certain sections of the Bible were actually not true. Some areas, even the book of the Song of Solomon should not be in the Bible, according to him. Now this guy who was also a pastor then stated that he didn’t really believe what he had to teach, but he had to teach what he was told. (Spineless coward) Fortunately, for my young 18 or 19 year old mind I had read the Bible most of my young life, and decided right then and there, that God never lies, but men do.
If all of us as Christians could just come to grips with the fact that God is Truth and cannot lie, many of our doubts and fears would be gone. It’s really that simple. Think about it. Men lie. Men make mistakes. God cannot lie, and He does not make mistakes.
If He says (and He does) that we are saved by grace through faith and cannot work for it, then it is the truth. He cannot lie. His Word is Truth, and the Bible is His Word. Therefore, I’m going to trust what the Bible says over anything someone else has to say. How about you?
The problem with most of us Christians is that we are lazy. Now admit it. It’s true. How often do we depend on what someone else says instead of what God says? Maybe these statements sound familiar; “Well, that’s what my pastor says,” or “That’s what our denomination says.” We should be saying, “This is what the Bible says,” and we should be saying it by personally reading what God says.
