The Tree of Knowledge?

I know Gods ways our not our ways, nor Gods thoughts our thoughts but I cant seem to understand why after creating a beautiful and perfect world, a Man and Woman etc would God put anything in the world that could bring about the downfall of man. Ive thought about this quite alot, I cannot recall reading anything in the OT regarding why it was there.

Why was the Tree of Knowledge put in the Garden of Eden?

In conjunction with my question I've wondered why Satan was cast down to earth?

I mean Adam and Eve were on the earth, I know the Almighty knew that by casting Satan out and sending him to reside on the earth that that could create a problem for His creation....so I dont get it, is there something I'm missing? Why Didnt God just destroy satan outright? He could do it in the blink of an eye.

God doesnt make mistakes, hence why I'm asking the questions.

Hmmm, very interesting questions, that have exercised philosophers through the ages, as well as godly men.

The overarching answer would be....God created for His pleasure and glory and has in His wisdom decided how to go about it.

He is not surprised by anything because He knows everything, He is not lacking in anything and does not need anything to complete Himself or add to His happiness. He never changes because He is already and always was and always will be perfect.

His original creation was not perfect, it was very good...the second creation will be perfect because it endures. God is not the author of sin, but it serves His purpose for it to exist, for the time being.

The devil serves His purpose and is subject, though he thinks otherwise. Likewise those who claim The Lord limits His sovereignty...if He did so, there would be something other than Him to which He would answer to, which is impossible. The Lord rules supreme, period.

Incidentally, the devil has not yet been cast down to earth, he still has access to Heaven in order to bring accusations.

The tree of knowledge was a test, a means of instruction, bait for the prideful and rebellious, a trap for the presumtuous.

This field of enquiry can lead to dangeous territory, we must not go beyond what is written.

Thanks for your answers, I appreciate your perspective on the questions.

I've often wondered if theres a balance that God designed to keep things running, theres an entirely different dimension to the one we exist in (heavenly dimension), at times one can feel it. It's difficult to put into words but I guess an example would be an engine requires oil, gaskets, pistons and so on and so forth...so each is dependant on the other.

I find it extremely interesting knowing that theres so much that God has done and is doing that is beyond our comprehension, its fascinating...what an awesome God! I wonder if we will know or be given the answers when we enter His Kingdom.

But your right, stick to whats written and get through this life and onto the next, the eternal one!

Bear in mind that it was not the Tree of Knowledge. It was the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. That makes a big difference.

You might find it useful to read what some of the great expositors have offered about this verse. One of them—the great English Baptist pastor, bible scholar and theologian John Gill (1697–1771)—had this to say.

And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food ... That is, out of the ground of the garden of Eden; and this was done on the third day, when the whole earth brought forth grass, herbs, and trees: but a peculiar spot of ground was fixed on for man, and stocked with trees of all sorts for his use, not only to bear fruit, which would be suitable and agreeable food for him, but others also, which would yield him delight to look at; such as the tall cedars for their loftiness, spreading branches and green leaves, with many others; so that not only there were trees to gratify the senses of tasting and smelling, but that of sight; and such a sightly goodly tree to look at was the tree of knowledge, Genesis 3:6. These trees may be an emblem of the saints, the trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, and made to grow by him through the influence of his Spirit and grace; and whom he plants in his gardens, the churches, and transplants into the heavenly paradise, and are often compared to palm trees, cedars, olive trees, pomegranates, &c.

the tree of life also in the midst of the garden ... set there as in the most excellent place, where it might be most conspicuous, and to be come at; for before Adam sinned, as there was no prohibition of his eating of it, so there was no obstruction to it; and as he had a grant to eat of it, with the other trees, it was designed for his use, to support and maintain his natural life, which would have been continued, had he persisted in his obedience and state of innocence, and very probably by means of this chiefly: hence the son of Sirach calls it the tree of immortality,"The knowledge of the commandments of the Lord is the doctrine of life: and they that do things that please him shall receive the fruit of the tree of immortality.'' (Sirach 19:19)and it might be also a sign, token, and symbol to him of his dependence on God; that he received his life from him; and that this was preserved by his blessing and providence, and not by his own power and skill; and that this would be continued, provided he transgressed not the divine law: and it seems to have a further respect, even to eternal life; by Christ; for though it might not be a symbol of that life to Adam in his state of innocence, yet it became so after his fall: hence Christ is sometimes signified by the tree of life, Proverbs 3:18 who is not only the author of natural and spiritual life, but the giver of eternal life; the promise of it is in him, and the blessing itself; he has made way for it by his obedience, sufferings, and death, and is the way unto it; it is in his gift, and he bestows it on all his people, and it will lie greatly in the enjoyment of him. The situation of this tree in the midst of the garden well agrees with him who is in the midst of his church and people, Revelation 1:13 stands open, is in sight, and is accessible to them all now, who may come to him, and partake of the fruits and blessings of his grace, which are many, constant, and durable, Revelation 22:2 and who will be seen and enjoyed by all, to all eternity:

and the tree of knowledge of good and evil ... so called, either with respect to God, who by it tried man, when he had made him, whether he would be good or evil; but this he foreknew: rather therefore with respect to man, not that the eating the fruit of it could really give him such knowledge, nor did he need it; for by the law of nature inscribed on his heart, he knew the difference between good and evil, and that what God commanded was good, and what he forbid was evil: but either it had its name from the virtue Satan ascribed to it, Genesis 3:5 or from the sad event following on man's eating the fruit of it, whereby he became experimentally sensible of the difference between good and evil, between obedience and disobedience to the will of God; he found by sad experience what good he had lost, or might have enjoyed, and what evil he had brought on himself and his posterity, he might have avoided. What this tree was is not certain; there are various conjectures about it, and nothing else can be come at concerning it.

But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it ... not that this tree had any efficacy in it to increase knowledge, and improve in science and understanding, as Satan suggested God knew; and therefore forbid the eating of it out of envy to man, which the divine Being is capable of; or that there was anything hurtful in it to the bodies of men, if they had eaten of it; or that it was unlawful and evil of itself, if it had not been expressly prohibited: but it was, previous to this injunction, a quite indifferent thing whether man ate of it or not; and therefore was pitched upon as a trial of man's obedience to God, under whose government he was, and whom it was fit he should obey in all things; and since he had a grant of all the trees of the garden but this, it was the greater aggravation of his offence that he should not abstain from it:

for in the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die ... or "in dying, die"; which denotes the certainty of it, as our version expresses it; and may have regard to more deaths than one; not only a corporeal one, which in some sense immediately took place, man became at once a mortal creature, who otherwise continuing in a state of innocence, and by eating of the tree of life, he was allowed to do, would have lived an immortal life; of the eating of which tree, by sinning he was debarred, his natural life not now to be continued long, at least not for ever; he was immediately arraigned, tried, and condemned to death, was found guilty of it, and became obnoxious to it, and death at once began to work in him; sin sowed the seeds of it in his body, and a train of miseries, afflictions, and diseases, began to appear, which at length issued in death. Moreover, a spiritual or moral death immediately ensued; he lost his original righteousness, in which he was created; the image of God in him was deformed; the powers and faculties of his soul were corrupted, and he became dead in sins and trespasses; the consequence of which, had it not been for the interposition of a surety and Saviour, who engaged to make satisfaction to law and justice, must have been eternal death, or an everlasting separation from God, to him and all his posterity; for the wages of sin is death, even death eternal, Romans 6:23.

Hope that helps a little. You can find more commentaries online if you want to see what some of the others have said. But, ultimately, it will be the Holy Spirit, using His Word, who will give you the understanding you desire.

The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil wasn't harmful in of itself nor was it evil in of itself; it did not contain sin. God had placed His boundary on it and excluded it from Man eating of it, but He didn't specifically create a thing that had sin in it anymore than when He originally created Lucifer (later Satan), that he had any sin in him. In the moment he took the fruit and ate it, Man decided that He wanted to know what Good and Evil was, and he found out in a way he never expected. The fruit he ate didn't give him any knowledge, but after he ate it, Adam knew what Good and evil was, and he and Eve had just committed sin.

That then begs the question: what about the Tree of Life? Didn't scripture say:

"Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life." (Genesis 3:22-24, NASB, emphasis mine)

While God did not create any evil in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, God did create tremendous good in the Tree of Life. Had Adam and Even eaten of that tree, they would have then lived forever in their sin-cursed bodies, permanently separated from the Lord.

The big question: why the choice at all?

God created man with a mind of his own and the freedom to choose; this is free will. This is repeatedly said in scripture:

"Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:14-15, NASB, emphasis mine)

"So Ahab sent a message among all the sons of Israel and brought the prophets together at Mount Carmel. Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word. Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left a prophet of the LORD, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men. Now let them give us two oxen; and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a fire under it. Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people said, “That is a good idea.”" (1 Kings 18:20-24, NASB, emphasis mine)

God didn't want pre-programmed "flesh-robots" serving Him that loved Him only because they were forced to do so. It would not be a genuine love, but forced. By giving Man free will, God gave him the ability to choose to love and serve Him, or turn away from Him and serve himself. Even though God knew what Man would choose, He still gave him that choice to make; to that end, He allowed Satan to tempt Man so that Man would have to choose between serving God and serving himself.

Now for the question about Satan: why did God cast him out instead of vaporizing him at "point-blank" range?

Satan was once the powerful angel named Lucifer, amongst the highest, if not the highest at the time, angel in heaven:

"“Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “You had the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The ruby, the topaz and the diamond; The beryl, the onyx and the jasper; The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald; And the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, Was in you. On the day that you were created They were prepared. You were the anointed cherub who covers, And I placed you there. You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked in the midst of the stones of fire."" (Ezekiel 28:12-14, NASB, emphasis mine)

Lucifer walked both in the Garden and before the Lord, and was perfect. Up until:

"You were blameless in your ways From the day you were created Until unrighteousness was found in you. “By the abundance of your trade You were internally filled with violence, And you sinned; Therefore I have cast you as profane From the mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I put you before kings, That they may see you. " (Ezekiel 28:13-17, NASB, emphasis mine)

Lucifer became prideful and conceited; he thought he was the most beautiful thing in all creation! Because of that, he sinned against the Lord and God cast Lucifer out of his position in heaven. In that, Lucifer became "Satan" (which means "Adversary"), and he accuses humanity before the Lord.

Now, what is confusing is the debate on when Satan was cast out. Jesus said in scripture: "And He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning." (Luke 10:18, NASB)

And in the Book of Revelation:

"And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. The dragon and his angels waged war, and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.” (Revelation 12:7-12, NASB, emphasis mine)

From the description in scripture, it seems the first time Satan and his Angels were cast out, it was from their positions in heaven. Being that they rebelled, God removed them from their appointed places and cast them out. The description in Revelation would appear to be a second time, in that Satan, who accuses humanity night and day, no longer has any accusations left. With that done, God removes him and his angels from heaven and no longer allows him access to come before the Lord.

What all of this is leading to is: Satan accuses humanity before God, and rather than simply saying "because I said so", God demonstrates why He is correct:

"Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. The LORD said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.” Then Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” Then the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD." (Job 1:6-12, NASB, emphasis mine)

Satan had accused Job before the Lord and the heavenly host (by the way: it also mentions here that Satan was walking around on the earth.), and rather than simply dismiss it, the Lord chose to answer it by allowing Job to be tested. In doing so, Satan's accusations against him were defeated, but he always seems to have more. What we see in Revelation is the point where Satan runs out of accusations that have not been answered, and the Lord's patience with this is over.

Now, who needs an answer here? Not God; He knows everything!

The heavenly host, however, are another matter; they are created beings, and while they posses a far greater knowledge (having observed the past for one thing), they are not omniscient. Scripture backs this:

"As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look." (1 Peter 1:10-12 NASB, emphasis mine)

Now, this is simply my opinion based on what I have read so far in scripture: when Satan and his 1/3 of the heavenly host were removed, this would have left a lot of unanswered questions amongst the heavenly host that remained. For the Lord to do all of this in front of the heavenly host seems to demonstrate that since they are curious and ask questions, the Lord wanted to show for them not only that He was correct, but to demonstrate what was wrong and why it was wrong. Otherwise, like Lucifer, if the host were left wondering, they potentially could come to some conclusions that were wrong and risk falling into the same trap Satan did, only for a different reason. Satan's pride had created a gaping maw, and the only way to close it was to show why Satan had erred.

You asked a very good question here, Kris762; I hope this gives you a bit more insight. I encourage you to continue studying scripture and see what the Lord says to you in it. And for the parts that I said in opinion: if you come up with something different, its' okay! :) I'm just a fellow traveler walking with the Lord, and my understanding at times isn't perfect either.

God bless,

YBIC,

-Robert

For me the simple answer is love and true love is by necessity ALWAYS a choice. In order for us to truly love God he had to give us the freedom to choose to not love Him. Sin is also a choice and is the antithesis of love.

The ability to choose to not love God is one thing that the tree represented. But it also demonstrated the perfection of God's love for us because love is not genuine unless it is freely and fully given expecting nothing in return. As Paul so beautifully pointed out in 1 Corinthians 13 love is the greatest gift from God and it "does not seek its own".

There's a reason why the first and greatest commandment centers on love for God and it has nothing to do with God needing or desiring to be loved by us. It is only through perfect obedience to that commandment, expecting nothing in return, that we can begin to understand and identify with the height, width and depth of God's immeasurable love for us.

Countless stories, poems and songs have been written about love, but if you think about it, whether they are happy or tragic they all center on "love seeking its own". Which means they really aren't truly about love at all! At least not as God defines love.

1 Corinthians 13:12
For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

The choice to live as a Christian is simply the giving of love freely, even to those who despise you, expecting nothing in return. I would submit to everyone that when you became born again you began an epic, eternal journey towards discovering how big and how amazing the selfless giving of love really is. To me at least that's what we "see in a mirror, dimly," because we all still feel the need to be loved. But when we see "face to face" we will perhaps understand that our need to be loved was always completely and perfectly filled but we just couldn't see it.

Rev 1:12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
Rev 1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
Rev 1:14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
Rev 1:15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
Rev 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
Rev 1:17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
Rev 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Psa 119:9 BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
Psa 119:10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
Psa 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psa 119:12 Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.
Psa 119:13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.
Psa 119:14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.
Psa 119:15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

24Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
Psa 119:16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

"Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite your whole territory with frogs. The Nile will swarm with frogs, which will come up and go into your house and into your bedroom and on your bed, and into the houses of your servants and on your people, and into your ovens and into your kneading bowls. So the frogs will come up on you and your people and all your servants.”’” Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the streams and over the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.’” So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. The magicians did the same with their secret arts, making frogs come up on the land of Egypt. Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, “Entreat the LORD that He remove the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to the LORD.” 9Moses said to Pharaoh, “The honor is yours to tell me: when shall I entreat for you and your servants and your people, that the frogs be destroyed from you and your houses, that they may be left only in the Nile?” Then he said, “Tomorrow.” So he said, “May it be according to your word, that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God. The frogs will depart from you and your houses and your servants and your people; they will be left only in the Nile.” Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the LORD concerning the frogs which He had inflicted upon Pharaoh. The LORD did according to the word of Moses, and the frogs died out of the houses, the courts, and the fields. So they piled them in heaps, and the land became foul. But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, as the LORD had said. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may become gnats through all the land of Egypt.’” They did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth, and there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats through all the land of Egypt. The magicians tried with their secret arts to bring forth gnats, but they could not; so there were gnats on man and beast. Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said. Now the LORD said to Moses, “Rise early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh, as he comes out to the water, and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. “For if you do not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and on your servants and on your people and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians will be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they dwell. But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where My people are living, so that no swarms of flies will be there, in order that you may know that I, the LORD, am in the midst of the land. I will put a division between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will occur.”’” Then the LORD did so. And there came great swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants and the land was laid waste because of the swarms of flies in all the land of Egypt. Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God within the land.” But Moses said, “It is not right to do so, for we will sacrifice to the LORD our God what is an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what is an abomination to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not then stone us? We must go a three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He commands us.” Pharaoh said, “I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. Make supplication for me.” Then Moses said, “Behold, I am going out from you, and I shall make supplication to the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people tomorrow; only do not let Pharaoh deal deceitfully again in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.” So Moses went out from Pharaoh and made supplication to the LORD. The LORD did as Moses asked, and removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants and from his people; not one remained. But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and he did not let the people go. " (Exodus 8:1-32, NASB, emphasis mine)

"The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.” Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in your Law, ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GODS’? If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father. Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp." (John 10:31-39 NASB, emphasis mine)

Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Gen 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
Gen 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Gen 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Gen 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Gen 3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
Gen 3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
Gen 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
Gen 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
Gen 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
Gen 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
Gen 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Gen 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Gen 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Gen 3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
Gen 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
Gen 3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
Gen 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Gen 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Gen 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

There's the will of man under his new corrupt nature wholly subject to sin. He runs from God. He has the knowledge of good and evil, he thinks he is now the arbiter...just like the liar said. Even the delusion that he can decide to repent or not. He cannot because he will not, sin has him. It is pure grace that The Lord pursued Adam further and saved him. Sovereignly, lovingly, purely grace. Humbling. It leaves me on my knees crying "have mercy on me a wretched sinner, O God". It is the core doctrine of the reformation, of the church all the way back to apostles, and all the way back to the Garden. The Lord has the keys, not us. And if it weren't for Him doing something, I'd have kept running. He is not obliged to save me, He could have passed me by in my vileness, but He chose to have mercy on me. The world will hate me for it...and the worst they can do to me is send me to Him. The new nature He put in me wants to go, and at the same time serve Him here. The flesh I still have wants otherwise, and it is an awful war, but I know He won it and will complete what He started. He said so.

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!

34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord?

Or who has become His counselor?”

35 “Or who has first given to Him

And it shall be repaid to him?”

36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

I think the above pretty much sums things up!
