Update: 5.6 quake hits near Alum Rock, strongest since Loma Prieta

A moderate, but powerful earthquake struck San Jose just after 8 p.m. tonight, shaking buildings and prompting rattled residents to pour out of their homes.

The temblor on the Calaveras Fault lasted about 30 seconds. The U.S. Geological Survey preliminary magnitude estimate was 5.6, making it the most powerful quake to hit the Bay Area since Loma Prieta, Oct. 17, 1989. That was a magnitude 6.9.

The epicenter was five miles miles from Alum Rock, seven miles from Milpitas and nine miles from San Jose City Hall with the earthquake originating 5.7 miles below ground.

Last night, I was watching O'Reilly Factor and there was a gal that had attended an Erotica Ball in SF and was reporting on it. Many of the pictures had to be blurred in places so you could not see openly displayed body parts. It was absolutely disgusting and all I could ask my husband was, "Why hasn't something happened there to get rid of this modern day Sodom and Gommorah?" Be careful what you wish for, I guess. Wonder if more are coming.

If Sodom and Gommorah was judged by God for their behavior, imagine repeating that error today. We have the history to see. These people are loving their open rebellion. At least the biblical participants were the first to cross those lines.

Agreed, but when you openly mock God and have been warned over and over, you suffer the consequences. By the way, we felt the quake all the way up here. Sometime in the morning, the television shook and my husband said the whole house rattled a bit.

There was also a 4 pointer in Wyoming somewhere today... I don't know if it was anywhere near Yellowstone? Anyone know?

A 4.0-magnitude earthquake shook the Gros Ventre Mountains on Tuesday evening and was felt as far away as Jackson, Wilson and Dubois.

The temblor was centered on the east slope of Hodges Peak, part of the sawtooth ridge that culminates in Tosi Peak above the community of Bondurant, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Web pages and University of Utah seismological stations. The center was in the Gros Ventre Wilderness in the remote Tosi Basin.

This small quake happened several miles south of Jackson, WY which is itself several miles south of Yellowstone. The article mentions that, on Sunday, Jackson also experienced a smaller quake. What caught my eye in this article was the photo of the mayor of Jackson seen to the left of the story. I wonder if this is a coincidence...

BTW, Yellowstone NP has been experiencing "swarms of tiny earthquakes recently.
