Scientists a step closer to steering hurricanes

Scientists have made a breakthrough in man's desire to control the forces of nature – unveiling plans to weaken hurricanes and steer them off course, to prevent tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina.

The damage done to New Orleans in 2005 has spurred two rival teams of climate experts, in America and Israel, to redouble their efforts to enable people to play God with the weather.

Under one scheme, aircraft would drop soot into the near-freezing cloud at the top of a hurricane, causing it to warm up and so reduce wind speeds. Computer simulations of the forces at work in the most violent storms have shown that even small changes can affect their paths – enabling them to be diverted from major cities.

The Creator has had MUCH MORE experience at this kind of thing. Somehow I believe that, if they try, the world is soon going to witness it's first Category 6 hurricane.

That's what I was thinking. They may just make matters worse.

I always thought we could do this the last 40 years or so. I remember in a college meteorology class, our prof talked about creating a "major low system" by starting a huge fire at sea and a hurricane would "follow" the low system. The moral question was, if you build this fire to avoid Miami getting hit, what would happen if you saved Miami but it turned toward NYC and you couldn't stop it or turn it.

So back in the mid 70s, they knew creating low systems would divert or manipulate hurricanes. Or at least they had the theory and that's what they were teaching in class.
