People commenting are saying this happens every year, then someone else mentioned this is the third time this year. I spent 2 winters in Phoenix back in 1980-81 and 1981-82, and I never heard mention of huge dust storms in those days. Hey Adrian, your wife is from Az, could you ask her?

When my husband and I drove over the road, we encountered a dust storm near Tuscon, AZ. Nothing like the one in the video, but it was bad enough to shut down the highway. Our semi wound up with a pitted windshield, and damaged paint job--and we were parked at the truckstop. There's nothing like tasting sand and dust grit! I'm thankful we always carried several gallons of water with us when we drove through the desert. It took awhile to get that grit out of everything. :)

I lived in Phoenix for 10 years. Such storms were not uncommon at all during the monsoon season.

Summertime in Ariz means possible dust storms. They are simply the result of the excessive winds produced by large thunderstorms combined with excessive drought. I grew up in Tucson, and now live about 80 miles east of Tucson, and these events have been occurring since I was a kid.

Whenever a summer storm (it isn't a monsoon!) builds up, it produces wind at the surface which of course, creates dust if the ground is very dry; which is very normal in the desert. Phoenix getting a couple or three in one summer is somewhat abnormal but not terribly abnormal. It just depends on where the storms build up and what direction the winds coming out of them travel. If a dust storm doesn't hit Phoenix, but travels through a more remote area, no one would even hear about it. For example, we live near a very large dry lake bed and a storm can send up tremendous clouds of dust which are very capable of shutting down the Interstate highway for a time. Nobody ever hears about this happening for a couple of reasons: 1)There is not much population around our neck of the woods, and 2) if a summer storm is brewing, the accompanying dust is NORMAL!

Went thru the same thing survivor3x mentioned above. What I was thankful for was, the new truck I was in the process of getting wasn't quite ready (shop having trouble getting the 3 axles set up on the rear end) and I had to make a couple more trips in my old Freightliner before getting into the new Peterbilt. So, suffered thru this mess with the old truck and missed it with the new one. That was a blessing!!
