Exclamation Terror fear as scientists DELIBERATELY create 'Armageddon' bird flu virus in lab

    By Fiona Macrae
    21st December 2011

A super-strain of bird flu that could infect and wipe out millions has been developed in a laboratory.

Dutch scientists who created the ‘Armageddon virus’ say it is ‘probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make’.

I know I heard a remark, and I can't cite it properly, but it sums it up perfectly....they are so busy creating that they don't stop and think if they SHOULD.....

(I think it was from Jurassic Park now that I think about it).

Default Details of lab-made bird flu won't be revealed

Amid concern over lab-bred bird flu, US says full details of research shouldn't be published

By Lauran Neergaard, AP Medical Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. government paid scientists to figure out how the deadly bird flu
virus might mutate to become a bigger threat to people — and two labs succeeded in creating
new strains that are easier to spread.

On Tuesday, federal officials took the unprecedented step of asking those scientists not to publicize
all the details of how they did it.

The worry: That this research with lots of potential to help the public might also be hijacked by would-be
bioterrorists. The labs found that it appears easier than scientists had thought for the so-called H5N1 bird
flu to evolve in a way that lets it spread easily between at least some mammals.

Terrible news for us, maybe, but think what great news it is for pharmaceutical companies. Just imagine all the billions they can make selling vaccines for this, especially if they can frighten enough people with a worldwide epidemic.

That line from Jurassic Park holds true for a whole lot of stuff. I'm hopeful that there can be some good to come out of this in terms of research. BUT, if anyone were to break into said lad and get ahold of the virus it could potentilally be used for nefarious purposes. I'd have to guess that security there is good, but if someone is determined enough there isn't often enough to keep them at bay.

Part of me wonders where the news story is from the '80's that tells of how a sexually transmitted plague was created in a breed of monkeys. No good can come out of creating a virus that can kill....simply because viruses mutate and adapt to their environment...they CAN'T be controlled and ALL scientists know this.

If it was created, it wasn't for any 'good' reason, that stuff about prevention is a load of newborn baby diapers. This so-called research is bad news, and no one is stopping it from happening...where are the protests outside the chem labs?

Both viruses and bacteria mutate, and more often than many likely realize. Look at all the drug resistant bacteria, like the super hard to kill staph that has recently reared its ugly head. The fact that all it would take is a miniscule leak in a seal or something similar to release the agent in question doesn't seem to cross anyone's mind. Anyone hear about the fact that human genes are being combined with animals because they could. "Until avenues of research" is usually what is offered as a reason. So might we be looking at eating an animal that is partially human, and no one has an issue with this? Cannibalism?

The article says there is a 50% death rate with this virus. I'm not too worried about it, now if the article said there was a 33.333....% death rate, well that would be cause for concern. :)
