Portuguese man-of-war show up on SC beach | The Augusta Chronicle

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported several of the jellyfish-like creatures have been spotted off the coast near Charleston. Officials have gotten reports on the animals from Folly Beach, the Isle of Palms and Dewees Island in the past week.

Those things are pretty dangerous. They have very long tentacles, usually in the 30 foot range according to Wikipedia, and the sting is really nasty. Might want to reconsider beach plans for the near future if you had any... There are several good photos at the bottom opf the Wiki page.

The most mordern of the current Portugese Man'o'War fleet, the 22-year old, German-designed, Vasco da Gama-class frigate, the F332 Corte-Real.
This type of Portugese Man'o'War usually hangs out near Norfolk, VA, so an appearance off the South Carolina coast could be considered rare.

I stepped on a little jelly fish that had washed up on the beach down in Texas once many years ago and I remember it was like a bee sting on steroids, of course it was on the bottom of my foot and around salt water, but still pretty painful.

I can’t imagine getting tangled up with one of these. It would not be good.
