Default Oil rig explodes west of BP site

An oil platform has exploded in the Gulf of Louisiana, injuring at least one person. The Coast Guard tells MSNBC that the platform is still burning, but says it is not a drilling rig.

Update at 12:52 p.m ET: USA TODAY's Alan Levin reports that several Coast Guard helicopters were on scene by late morning and attempting to rescue the 13 workers who had been thrown into the water, according to Commander Cheri Ben-Iesau. The crew had donned brightly colored survival gear known as "Gumby suits" and there had been no reports of fatalities, Ben-Iesau says. according to Levin. "We are actively pulling them out of the water right now," she says.

It was not clear whether today's explosion was the result of a blowout or whether it had caused any leaks of crude oil, Ben-Iesau says. The platform is owned by Mariner Energy. The AP reports that the platform was not producing oil at the time of the accident.

Update at 12:14 p.m. ET: The New Orleans Tiems-Picayune descrbies the facility, called Vermillion 380, as a "fixed, manned production platform." The newspaper says the platform is not involved in drilling and, unlike the ill-fated BP rig, is not a floating rig, but rather is a fixed platform.

Update at 12:11 p.m. ET: The Coast Guard tells MSNBC that the facility is not a rig, but is a platform that does not do any drilling.

Update at 12:04 p.m. ET: The rig, owned by Mariner Energy, is located west of the BP spill site, the Associated Press reports. The incident was first reported by a commercial helicopter company around 10:30 a.m. ET, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel. The Coast Guard confirmes there is one injury, but no deaths. The platform is in about 2,500 feet of water, the Coast Guard said, but is not currently producing, the AP reports.

Update at 11:48 a.m. ET: Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel says a helicopter was sent to the site after a report that the rig was on fire "and that there was smoke and there were people in the water,'' The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reports.

Update at 11:41 a.m. ET: The Coast Guard says the oil rig is located 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay, Louisiana.

Update at 11:38 a.m. ET: MSNBC quotes Coast Guard Petty Officer John Edwards as saying one worker has been injured, but he did not know the extent of the injuries. Edwards says 9 helicopters and some fixed-wing aircraft as well as four Coast Guard cutters have been sent to the site.

Update at 11:35 a.m. ET: MSNBC quotes a Coast Guard spokesman as saying all of the workers were wearing protective gear.

Oil platform catches fire, one injured

An explosion on an oil platform south of Vermilion Bay sent the 13 people on board into the water Thursday morning around 9:30 a.m.

The incident happened 90 miles south of Vermillion Bay. (See map) at link below

Coast Guard spokesman Bill Colclough said all 13 people have been accounted for and that one of them was injured.
The injured person is going to be taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center.

Colclough said the platform owned by Mariner Energy was still on fire as of 11 a.m. and that reports are that it wasn’t an active well.

Four Coast Guard choppers from New Orleans and four from Houston were in route to the scene. A vessel was also in transit.

Coast Guard Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesau says some of those from the platform were spotted in emergency flotation devices.

Mariner Energy focuses on oil and gas exploration and production company focused on the Gulf of Mexico. In April, Apache Corp., another independent petroleum company, announced plans to buy Mariner in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $3.9 billion, including the assumption of about $1.2 billion of Mariner's debt. That deal
    is pending.

Apache spokesman Bob Dye said the platform is in shallow water. The platform was identified as Vermilion 308 A, according to Mariner.

Responding to an oil spill in shallow water is much easier than in deepwater, where crews depend on remote-operated vehicles access equipment on the sea floor.

The platform is about 200 miles west of BP's blown out Macondo well. On Friday, BP was expected to begin the process of removing the cap and failed blow-out preventer, another step toward completion of a relief well that would complete the choke of the well. The BP-leased rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, killing 11 people and setting off a massive oil spill.

Oil Platform Explodes In Gulf Of Mexico

13 Workers Accounted For; At Least 1 Injured

    POSTED: 10:11 am CDT September 2, 2010
    UPDATED: 12:01 pm CDT September 2, 2010

NEW ORLEANS -- At least one person was injured after an explosion on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
It happened around 9 a.m., and as of 10:15 a.m., the platform was still burning, Chief Petty Officer John Edwards said. Rescue crews from New Orleans and Houston are responding.

Officials said there were 13 people aboard the structure, and all of them have been accounted for. Initial reports from the Coast Guard indicated that one person was missing.

Injured workers are being taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma, officials said.
Two helicopters from Houston and three from New Orleans are responding to the blast. Two other fixed-wing planes and two cutter ships are also responding, the Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard officials described the burning structure as a platform, not a rig, which means it was not actively engaged in drilling.

The platform is owned by Mariner Energy.

It's not clear yet whether the structure is leaking any oil. Many of the crews that responded to the blast are those in the area for the cleanup of the BP oil spill, which followed the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig on April 20.

According to Mariner Energy's website, the company engages in deepwater drilling in the gulf, including "higher-risk, high-impact projects that have the potential to create substantial value for our stockholders."

Mariner Energy is headquartered in Houston and has an office in Lafayette, La.

Mariner Energy shares fall after platform blast
By CHRIS KAHN (AP) – 32 minutes ago

NEW YORK — Mariner Energy shares dropped nearly 3 percent Thursday following news that one of its production platforms exploded in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mariner shares lost 69 cents, nearly 3 percent, to $22.66 in midday trading.

The Houston independent oil and gas company is a relatively small player compared with BP, Shell and other oil giants operating in the Gulf. In April, Apache Corp. said it planned to buy the company for $2.7 billion, though the deal hasn't been completed yet.

Apache shares fell $1.64 to $90.82.

Most of Mariner's operations are in West Texas and along the Gulf Coast. The company also owns more than 240 blocks in shallow parts of the Gulf of Mexico.

The platform that exploded was called the Vermilion 380. According to regulatory filings, Mariner owns 100 percent of the platform. The filing said Vermillion 380 produced 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas last year, and it's tapped into proven reserves of 33.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas.

The platform is west of where BP's Deepwater Horizon exploded in April, setting off a massive oil spill.

    Hmmmm...I'm definitely suspicious.
There's more than meets the eye here.

I'd have to send an email to a brother-in-faith, in Calgary, Alberta,
whose a professional geologist for his opinion.

But there's something unusual happening in the geological layers beneath the Gulf
    of Mexico that needs explaining.
