BP, plaintiffs reach $7.8 billion deal in Gulf oil spill

(CNN) -- BP and plaintiffs involved in the legal battle over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill -- the largest in U.S. history -- have reached an agreement, both sides said late Friday.

BP estimated that it would have to pay about $7.8 billion in the Deepwater Horizon disaster settlement.

"The proposed settlement represents significant progress toward resolving issues from the Deepwater Horizon accident and contributing further to economic and environmental restoration efforts along the Gulf Coast," said Bob Dudley, the CEO of BP.

A group representing the plaintiffs in the case said the settlement "will fully compensate hundreds of thousands of victims of the tragedy."

"The settlement is to be fully funded by BP, with no cap on the amount BP will pay," the group added.

It took them almost 2 years to reach this; but the money does not make up for the loss of the loved ones these families have had to endure, let alone the suffering of those whose livelihoods were ruined in the resulting spill.

Still ing for the families in this mess, both the ones who lost their loved ones as well as those who suffered in the resulting nightmare on the shores.

Are there any RF-res living near the damaged coastlines? If so, what kind of things have you seen? Curious to get first-hand info that hasn't been through the mainstream filters....

! Re: Deepwater Horizon: The Roster of the Dead UPDATE

    UPDATE:

BP to pay record fine for Gulf oil spill - Nov. 15, 2012

    From article:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- BP will plead guilty to manslaughter charges stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and agreed to pay $4.5 billion in government penalties, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Thursday. Of the penalties, $4 billion will resolve criminal charges. An additional $525 million will be paid to resolve claims brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission that BP lied to investors by understating the amount of oil flowing into the Gulf. Separate from the corporate manslaughter charges, a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging the two highest-ranking BP supervisors on board the Deepwater Horizon on the day of the explosion with 23 criminal counts. The two men were charged with seaman's manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter for each of the 11 men killed in the blast, as well as a criminal violation of the clean water act.

And the 4-1/2 billion dollars will evaporate in the government coffers. Nothing will bring back the dead workers, nor will anything adequately compensate their survivors.

I agree with you and Robert about the great loss of these men are to their families, not just wives and children but their parents and siblings. A gap that can never be filled or replaced by money.

So sad I read not so long ago there was another mining disaster in South America many lost their lives. Just another mining disaster as there are many who have recently been killed as greedy companies push their men and their equipment to the limit without thought of safety of their employees.

Life is cheap to Big Businesses who put profit before people.

for the families who have lost loved ones on the job. May the Lord comfort them in their grief and bring them to Jesus and His salvation, amen.

True, but my point is that at least people are rightfully facing charges for this now.

Oh, I wasn't criticizing your post in any way, bro. I was glad to see it. But I was echoing and expanding on your earlier sentiments from a year of more ago about how the real victims will never receive justice ... at least not in this world.

    I know bro, no worries

I'm happy to see that the Lord is at least providing some justice here. Not the full measure, but BP now has the idea that they didn't get clean away with it.
