Survey: Record number of Israeli Jews believe in God
First comprehensive study in a decade: 70 percent of respondents believe the Jews are the 'Chosen People.'

Fully 80 percent of Israeli Jews believe that God exists - the highest figure found by the Guttman-Avi Chai survey since this review of Israeli-Jewish beliefs began two decades ago.

The latest survey of the "Beliefs, Observance and Values among Israeli Jews" was conducted in 2009 but the results were released only on Thursday, after a detailed analysis had been completed. The two previous surveys were in 1999 and 1991.
The study also found that 70 percent of respondents believe the Jews are the "Chosen People," 65 percent believe the Torah and mitzvot (religious commandments ) are God-given, and 56 percent believe in life after death.

Overall, the survey found an increase in attachment to Jewish religion and tradition from 1999 to 2009, following a decrease from 1991 to 1999, which was the decade of mass immigration from the former Soviet Union. Among other things, it found that less than half of Israeli Jews think that, in a clash between Jewish law and democracy, democratic values should always prevail.

The study, conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute's Guttman Center for Surveys and the Avi Chai Foundation, is based on interviews with 2,803 Israeli Jews.

It found that only 46 percent of Israeli Jews now define themselves as secular, down from 52 percent in 1999, while 22 percent define themselves as either Orthodox or ultra-Orthodox, up from 16 percent in 1999. The remaining 32 percent term themselves traditional, virtually unchanged from 1999.

This change in self-identification was also reflected in the proportion of those subscribing to traditional Jewish beliefs. For instance, 55 percent said they believe in the coming of the Messiah, up from 45 percent in 1999 but similar to 53 percent in 1991, while 37 percent said that "a Jew who does not observe the religious precepts endangers the entire Jewish people," up from 30 percent in 1999 but again similar to the 1991 figure of 35 percent.

Is this a sign? Could this be a step in the direction of them wanting their Temple built?

As for me, this is a sign that Israel is returning to HaShem. This means that their leaders probably will also (or at least appear to to appease the masses.)

This is encouraging. I remember when the said Israel was 90% secular. I wonder if God is getting them ready for Jesus or just moving them closer to being ready to call for a temple??

That's what I am wondering, we know Israel builds a Temple, I would think most of the country would be believing they are Gods chosen people and they need a Temple. I believe they are on course for that and something could happen in the near future to speed that process up, I could speculate, maybe something happens to make them feel like they are alone with no one to help them but God. I don't know but I agree it is encouraging.

I agree, it is a positive sign and gives impetus to the rebuilding of the temple!

I believe this is a sign and that When Gog/Magog happens and God miraculously protects them, it will be the tipping point of them deciding to go ahead and rebuild the temple. After all, at that point there will be no worries about offending the Muslims so they could just go ahead and tear down the Dome of the Rock mosque and rebuild the temple. Maranatha!

Yes, and 1 Kings 5 provides us with the template for when King Solomon built the first Temple - Israel was at peace without any immediate enemy or threat.

This is where Israel will find itself after the conclusion of the Isaiah 17, Psalm 83 and Ezekiel 38/39 wars - no enemies in sight, along with a "covenant among many" allegedly guaranteeing them "peace."

I think it is a positive sign for Israel and for many long years the rebuilding of the Temple has been a topic by those in Israel who has made it their life task to prepare the Temple Items which is a really interesting subject .

A Jew who does not accept Jesus Christ as the savior is the one endangered
if and when that ""Jew" is born again He or she then is simply a Born again Christian
they would recognize observance or religious precepts is NOT WHAT SAVED THEM
