I think that a lunar eclipse could be what the Bible is describing what will happen to the moon before the Lord does return.

Good post and I understand your sentiments completely FreedomInChrist.

However, based upon my forty years of eschatological research, and given that the signs Jesus spoke of and Joel prophesied about will occur during the 70th Week, I believe that the darkened sun and blood red moon are more likely to be the direct result of global thermonuclear war and its "nuclear winter" aftermath than something as benign as a routine lunar eclipse.

Matt, no worries, brother, and thank you for the kind words. These are some of the challenges of the written word, confusion is not uncommon! I could have been more clear in my post.

I know that lunar eclipses are pretty common, so what Sean said about thermonuclear war is a very interesting idea I had not considered! It seems like that would be more of a defining event than a lunar eclipse.
